  • Chapter 23 discussion response

    Expectations

The discussion responses you submit for each Discussion Post should all follow the same format and style. These should be 250-350 words, and are meant to be written in a “blog style,” as opposed to more formal writing. The intention behind this is to map the process of learning and analyzing history–therefore it should have a tone of personal reflection in addition to analysis. Reflect on the content you’ve learned in this unit. Then, consider your position/experience and how you relate to this material (yes–you can use first-person). Though there is an overall informal tone to these posts, your answers should employ critical thinking (as opposed to regurgitating material) and effectively apply reading and media sources from the unit’s module within your overall analysis.

Include several specifics from course material, offering really simplistic citations in parentheses. An in-text, parenthetical citation would be placed at the end of the sentence you are attributing your citation.

Here are a few examples of the in-text citation format:

Citing Primary Sources: (Document 11.1), (Document 11.2)

Citing Textbook: (YAWP, 5.3), (American Yawp, Chapter 11: The Cotton Revolution) or (American YAWP, 3.4)

For citations. That would include the following:

    • The American YAWP textbook
    • Containing Multitudes

    Background

The Great Depression touched nearly every American’s life in a profound way during the 1930s. However, people were effected in different ways and had varied opinions on what should be done and how involved the federal government should be in relief. Roosevelt’s New Deal garnered a great deal of support as well as criticism. Drawing on this unit’s material, write a 250-350 word post considering the below questions in your response.

    Questions

    1. Discuss several examples of how harshly people were struggling during the Depression.
    2. What New Deal programs seemed successful in aiding people in need?
    3. What aspects of the New Deal garnered criticism? Why?
    4. Why is it important for us to investigate periods of crisis in American history, like the Depression, and understand the divided attitudes towards the federal government’s involvement in crisis recovery?

Substantially fulfills all assignment requirements (minimum 400 words): 60 points

References and citations from course or other source material: 20 points

    College-level spelling/grammar: 10 points

    APA quality/content: 10 points

    Total: 100 points

When working on this week’s assignment, please keep the following in mind:

This week’s assignment must be completed and submitted by Sunday at 11:59 pm (Miami time). Your work will be graded and your grade awarded no later than Tuesday of the following week at 5 pm (Miami time). To view your grades and feedback on your assignment, please refer to your gradebook.

You must use a minimum of 250 words to answer the entire assignment, including the answers to all three (3) questions. There is no penalty for exceeding the minimum word count for each section. In fact, any excess words will be considered in the final grade.

A minimum of two references in addition to your textbook are required. Remember to include bibliographic citations within your text and list your bibliography on the last page of your document (references page).

All original written work must include a cover page. The assignment must be presented according to the content, format, and style guidelines of the American Psychological Association (APA), latest edition. Remember that APA style requires double spacing, not extra double spacing between paragraphs, a 12-point Times New Roman or Arial font only, and 1-inch margins on all four sides. Do not copy directly from the internet; all citations must conform to APA style. Remember to include bibliographic citations within the text. You must also include the bibliography at the end of your discussion. Please do not consult sources such as Wikipedia, Monographs, or Gestipolis. Use professional sources that include the author’s name(s) and publication date. The evaluation of submitted work will be based on the following criteria: content, clarity, quality of sources used, grammar, citation of authors, and others.

    NOTE: SafeAssignment:

Before submitting your assignment in the Assignment Box, you must review it using SafeAssignment, located in the left-hand column of your webpage. The Cover Page section. Once you obtain the similarity score for your work, click on “Originality” in the upper left corner. This page will show you the similarity score and the sources from which you copied and pasted the information. You must copy and paste this entire report (which is your own report) into a Word document, which you will submit in the Assignment Box along with your Weekly Assignment.

If the similarity score is more than 20%, you will have to redo the work without copying and pasting direct concepts from the author(s), even if you have formatted your citations according to APA style. You must make an effort to use your own words and ideas based on your understanding of the book or articles consulted after reading them, and cite the original sources from which you obtained the information perfectly in APA format, so that the similarity score is less than 20%.

If the similarity score is less than 20%, it is an acceptable limit, and the work will be ready to be submitted to the instructor.

Very Important. For general instructions on For the assignment, click here.

Write three full pages, but no more than five pages. Your work must include two additional pages: a title page and a references page.

    Please cite all your sources.

If you are unfamiliar with the APA guidelines for submitting papers, visit the General Documents area at Start Here.

Remember to use quotation marks when citing your sources. No more than 20% of your work will be direct quotes. I want your ANALYSIS, not something copied from the internet.

Graded Discussion on Democracy. Can there be too much of a good thing?

    Hi Everyone,

Okay, this week we are beginning (or in some ways continuing) our discussion of different forms of governing philosophies with a focus on democracy. As we will see the term democracy has been stretched over the preceding several hundred years to mean different things. Democracy can be ‘rule by the people’ but there are also other strands such liberal democracy, social democracy, direct democracy, and other terms such as social democracy, democratic socialism, which use the term democracy for their own definitions. Furthermore, democracy is more than elections. Elections can occur in non-democracies (e.g. Iran, Putin’s Russia, Venezuela) and elections can be used to subvert democracy (more on this in the coming weeks). So democracy is more than elections but it can also mean different policies or practices to different people.

Having said this, I want you to do the readings, listen/watch the videos and ask yourself what is democracy to you, and can there be too much or not enough? Are there potential challenges in having too much democracy?
