Profanity and Communication

• Appropriate language does not include profanity or vulgar expressions (especially in public speaking or in the workplace (see Chapter 6 pg.191)

• Over the years it has become more common due to the influence of TV, film, and music media who aim to shock and entertain.

• Competent communicators avoid using profanity because it is more likely to damage relationships rather than strengthen them.

Some Reasons Why People Use Profanity

Assert independence

Hard habit to break

Filler expressions

Communicate strong emotions

To shock and intimidate

To communicate disgust or contempt

• Students are to: Eavesdrop on someone elses conversation. This can be done anywhere! (In line at the movies, at a party or gathering, at a sporting event etc…). For our topic and discussion this week, we will be looking at the concept of the state.

One of the most important organizing units in politics is the “state” which has both domestic and international significance. For this week, I want you to read Max Weber’s and Francis Fukuyama’s essays on the “state” and ask yourselves:

1. How does Max Weber define the state?

2. What does Fukuyama say about why a state should be formed?

3. Do you agree with these two scholars about what a state is and its function (for this question focus on the Fukuyama reading).

One of the most important organizing units in politics is the “state” which has both domestic and international significance. For this week, I want you to read Max Weber’s and Francis Fukuyama’s essays on the “state” and ask yourselves:

1. How does Max Weber define the state?

2. What does Fukuyama say about why a state should be formed?

3. Do you agree with these two scholars about what a state is and its function (for this question focus on the Fukuyama reading).

The research paper is designed to allow students the freedom to explore a topic of their choosing in regard to the governance and politics of the Middle East. Students are required to submit a one

paragraph proposal by the beginning of week three for approval by the instructor. The goal here is

to provide a creative medium for students to explore in-depth a topic which is of interest to them

and to assist in developing research skills and putting together a scholarly argument. Essay will

require a minimum of five scholarly sources, following acceptable writing guidelines (ex: MLA

format). Proposing and writing an abstract are part of the project. Students are encouraged to contact

the instructor with questions and to meet regularly with him to cover updates to the study in progress.

For your paper you will need three scholarly sources. This includes academic peer-reviewed articles, books, or essays. It can also include primary sources such as speeches or official historic documents. For your assignment I want you to submit at least three sources that you will be using for your paper.

You can find sources on the library website data base: to an external site.. Or you can also find sources using Google Scholar (Although these are not always listed). For historical sources, you can look at official government archives like the National Archives or Presidential Libraries or government agencies like the Department of State (just to name one). You can also use think tanks to find research material. Some notable think tanks include: The Council on Foreign Relations, The American Enterprise Institute, Foundation for the Advancement of Freedom, The Brooking Institute, the Atlantic Council, and so forth.

What I want you to avoid are blogs, opinion pieces, and mundane online sources like Britannica.com or any of the online encyclopedias. These are good to begin to to get oriented but they do not provide much more beyond this. No wikipidia.

And absolutely no AI for this paper. I want you to practice looking for sources on your own.
