  • Ecology Question

*****South American Palm Weevil (Rhynchophorus palmarum)****** DO THIS INVASIVE SPECIES

    Science Communication Activity

Core Concept SciComm Assignment on an invasive species (~250-300 word essay):

    Correct

In this assignment you will select an invasive species to learn about and then critically critique what fact sheets are currently available for your selected INVASIVE insect species. For the purposes of this course, we use the following definitions:

    1. Invasive species = a non-native species that invades a habitat and causes significant ecological, environmental or economic damage

    2. Introduced (non-native) species = a species introduced from somewhere else

For this assignment, please locate at least three fact sheets on the same invasive INSECT species. Review these fact sheets and think about what makes a successful (i.e., effective) invader fact sheet. All writing must be your own and without the use of any generative AI tools. Spell check and grammar check are fine. The goal here is to see what you find to be the dos and donts in making an effective invasive species fact sheet. I have included two example fact sheets (only one is an insect though) and you CANNOT use this fact sheet as one of your three. You will need to submit your invasive species name ahead of time so we can avoid overlap in species selections. Please check that your species is not already selected (list of already claimed species) and then if it is still available, please submit your invasive insect’s name here: https://forms.gle/w8PD1SpCm2ALsBsX7Links to an external site.

This assignment will be graded in two parts: pre-writing (3 pts): identify the name of your invasive species (it must be an insect and it must be invasive using the definition above), link to at least one Research Grade observation of the species in iNaturalist (please paste in the url), and provide a link to at least one fact sheet. Deadline is Friday Feb 27.

The second part is the fact sheet assessment (7 pts). In ~250-300 words, please identify the invasive species and where it is invasive (i.e., what is its introduced range). Briefly describe what you think are the most important aspects that make one of your selected fact sheets successful in communicating their ecology, their impact, and their importance (e.g., the dos) and what factors should be avoided in a fact sheet (e.g., the donts; what did you find confusing or unhelpful or missing?). [Note: you will need to identify which fact sheets you found successful and which ones you found unsuccessful.] Make sure to use APA format for any outside references and fact sheets used. Deadline is March 13th.

*** We are interested in learning what YOU find successful and what YOU find missing or less successful about the fact sheets. This short one paragraph essay must be your own work. Generative AI tools are not permitted. **

    What constitutes a fact sheet?

An invasive species fact sheet is usually at least 1-2 (printed) pages and is a document intended to educate either the public or stakeholders; a web-based version might be a bit longer. A fact sheet at minimum must include basic information about the species, their description, distribution, habitat, behavior, diet or ecology and their negative impacts. Additional information as to what we can do (how to report, how to help prevent spread of the invader, how to mitigate the impacts of the invader, etc) may also be included. For this assignment, you will want to make sure you are referencing fact sheets produced by a reliable source, such as a government agency, a university, or relevant institution (e.g., Nature Conservancy, the Global Invasive Species Database through the IUCN, Smithsonian Institute, etc). If you have any concerns that your source might not be reliable or any questions about the assignment, please ask at office hours or send me an email!

For part 2 (the fact sheet assessment), you will be graded on the following criteria:

    Met Not met Criteria description

Appropriate invasive species fact sheets (minimum of 3) were selected. Make sure these are from a reputable source as noted above (e.g., a government agency, university, extension, etc.)

The submission discriminates between what you found to be successful and less successful (or unsuccessful) fact sheets. Each fact sheet is classified as successful or not.

Submission correctly identifies at least two factors that you found to contribute towards a fact sheets success (i.e., identifies what works for that fact sheet)

Submission correctly identifies at least two factors that you think should be avoided when making a fact sheet (i.e., identifies mistakes or things that make a fact sheet unsuccessful)

Submission includes a bibliography of all references and fact sheets used. Please use APA format (https://arc.ucr.edu/document/apa-citation-guide). See additional guidelines below.

Words are spelled and used correctly. The summary is free of major grammatical errors, logical inconsistencies or false statements

Submission is submitted on time and follows all submission guidelines as described in the activity description above.

  • Twelve angry men long assignment

    Instructions

In this assignment, I will present you with two arguments: an argument from 12 Angry Men (that you may have reconstructed on your first SBA), and an argument from a US Supreme Court Case which holds that the Civil Rights Act protects LGBT people from employment discrimination. For your convenience, I have provided a reconstruction of each argument. You should use the ARS criteria to assess each argument. That is, you should apply the ARS criteria to determine whether each argument ultimately succeeds or fails to make a strong case for its conclusion.

To do so, you should fill out the tables I have supplied with checks (), exes (), N/As, and question marks (?), corresponding to your analysis. You may refer to the lectureover chapter 5 for guidance about how to do this properly.

You should accompany your filled out-chart with a written argument analysis. If you think the argument is weak, you should diagnose at least one specific flaw in terms of the ARS criteria (indicated by an or a ? on your chart) and explain how it undermines the argument. You should write at least one paragraph about each or ? you put on your chart. If youthink the argument is strong, you should defend it from at least two likely criticisms. That is, think of two specific objectionsthat a critic might raise. Make sure you indicate what aspect of the argument those criticisms would undermine in terms of the acceptability, relevance, or sufficiency of the premises (i.e. tell me where the critic you have imagined would put an or ? on their chart.) Then you should rebut those criticisms to explain why you think the argument remains strong.

Develop a 35 page workplace harassment policy for either Java Corp or an organization with which you are familiar. Be sure the policy you develop reflects ethical considerations and benefits to both the employee and organization as well as relevant legislation related to various types of harassment. Also, create an 812 slide PowerPoint presentation with speaker’s notes to present the new policy and to support it with legal and strategic rationale for the selected organization’s upper management.

HR professionals are often called upon to develop new workplace policies to increase an organization’s effectiveness and to protect it from possible legal liabilities. Creating a succinct and comprehensive presentation for organizational management and other stakeholders is a valuable skill to possess.

For this assessment, choose either option 1 or 2. You do not need to do both. You will apply one of these scenarios in the instructions below. Both options will be graded using the same scoring guide.

    Option 1

You are the new HR manager for Java Corp. The company has just lost a sexual harassment lawsuit and damages include back pay, front pay, punitive damages, and attorney’s fees. The plaintiff, Ms. Stapel, was a female manager who had a consensual sexual relationship with her male boss, Mr. Rowe. Both moved up in title and responsibility over the past 5 years. After the relationship ended, Mr. Rowe made several offensive comments to co-workers about Ms. Stapel, without her knowledge. Later, a number of other employees, who reported to Mr. Rowe, made offensive sexual comments directly to Ms. Stapel.

The company has a harassment policy but only referred someone who felt harassed to their immediate supervisor and provided no other avenues of complaint. Your first project for Java Corp is to create a formal policy that will protect the employees, the organization, and all stakeholders. You will also prepare a PowerPoint presentation that could be used as a training tool for new employees on the importance of following anti-harassment policies.

    Option 2

Choose an organization to use for this assessment. It can be where you are currently employed or a company with which you are familiar. It must be an organization that is researchable, as you will need to gather and analyze information to complete the assessment. You may use the same organization you selected for previous assessments.

If you choose the organization where you are currently employed, please keep in mind that the analyses you make must be based on facts that can be documented rather than your personal opinion as an employee.

Think about a situation in which an employee was sexually harassed at work. Reflect on what the organization did well and what the organization did wrong.

Based on your research of sexual harassment and other forms of unlawful workplace harassment, complete the following:

In a word document, develop an anti-harassment workplace policy that includes the following components:

    • Objective.
    • Prohibited conduct under this policy, including discrimination, harassment, sexual harassment, and retaliation.
    • Confidentiality.
    • Complaint procedure.
    • Employee acknowledgment of policy.

Prepare a PowerPoint Presentation for upper management training. In your presentation:

    • Explain the legal basis for protecting employees from harassment with supporting laws or regulations.
    • Describe different types of sexual harassment found in the workplace.
      • This can include, but not limited to, quid pro quo and hostile work environment.
    • Explain other types of harassment, outside of sexual harassment, to consider in a workplace policy.
    • Articulate how an organization can be at risk of harassment claims and how they can best legally protect themselves.
    • Summarize reporting and investigation procedures.
      • Specifically, discuss how the issue or complaint is brought to HR’s attention, who is involved in the investigation, how the communication process works with those involved.
    • Summarize how the anti-harassment policy should be communicated to employees.
    • Analyze organizational benefits realized because of having a sound anti-harassment policy in place.
      • Consider company reputation, employee morale, retention, productivity, and the like.

    Additional Requirements

    Policy

This part of your assessment should also meet the following requirements:

    • Length: 35 pages. Strive to be as detailed as possible in addressing each of the policy’s components above.
    • Written communication: Communicate in a manner that is scholarly and professional. Your writing should be:
      • Concise and logically organized.
      • Free of errors in grammar and mechanics.
    • Resources: If you use a source in the text of your policy, you need to reference it. The last page of your policy should be your reference list. Format all citations and references in accordance with current .

    PowerPoint Presentation

This part of your assessment should also meet the following requirements:

    • Audience: Create a presentation suitable for the upper management of your selected organization.
    • Length: 812 slides, including speaker’s notes and title and references slides.
    • Validation and support: Use a minimum of seven relevant and credible scholarly or professional resources such as the Wall Street Journal to support your work.
    • APA format: Format all citations and references in accordance with current APA guidelines. Refer to the Campus page for guidance.
    • Complexity: Do not get hung up on adding too many graphics, audio, or video. Select a PowerPoint template appropriate for a professional presentation. Please make sure the background color you choose does not interfere with the font selection and that it is easy to read. Do not overbuild your slides; information that supports and expands on what you say should appear as speaker’s or presenter’s notes.

Note: It is expected that your SafeAssign results for the policy document in Word will have a high percentage match, as you are aligning with legal standards. Your PowerPoint presentation should not be nearly as high. Please make sure you cite your sources within both documents according to current APA style.

Your PowerPoint presentation should be saved as a PDF to properly capture the presenter notes.

Here is how to save PowerPoint as PDF with notes included (Microsoft, n.d.):

    • Open your PowerPoint presentation.
    • Click File > Print.
    • Under Print, click Microsoft Print to PDF.
    • Under Settings, click the second box (which defaults to say Full Page Slides).
    • Under Print Layout, click Notes Pages.
    • Click Print.
