  • Writing Question

Part of the project of this course is discovering how the texts we read effect/reflect/shift your own experiences with the planet, nature, or wilderness. For your first paper, you will write a narrative about your connection to the early works and ideas presented in the class.

The paper will have two parts:

    1. TEXT: Identify a specific text and concept. Find a quote/section of text (lyrical description, exposition of idea, factual, etc.) that moved you and that you could connect in some way to your own experience. The quote should appear in the paper with an explanation of which concept you feel it embodies.
    1. YOUR EXPERIENCE: Connect this concept or section of text to your own life with a story or description of a moment. This part of the paper will use the skills of good narrative. Tell your story using specificity and rich description. The conclusion will connect the two.

    Sample topics:

-A Small Place offers a critique of tourism and explores our ideas of nature. This might lead to a new reflection on your own travels.

-Into the Wild offers us specific ideas about wilderness and what it offers us. How might your own experience of nature be similar or different.

An A paper will make strong use of imagery and description in the personal narrative section, clearly articulate the connection to the text and concept, and conform to rules of grammar and style. (20 points)

3-4 pages, 12 pt. Times New Roman, MLA style

The rubric will be attached as well. Try and write the way I do, Here is an example of an assignment I wrote:

    Plastic items used:

    • Aquafina water bottles
    • Trash bags
    • tooth brush
    • protein bar wrapper
    • hair cream bottle
    • tuperware
    • BodyArmor drink bottle

I honestly was not aware of how much plastic I was using daily because I did not realize that the things that are reused that I use are also made from plastic. So I did have to account for those items. I think some of the plastic I used was recyclable like the water bottles I used at least. I think it goes to specific plants and it is melted and formed into usable items that can well, obviously be recycled. I honestly am concerned and I have been for some time now because I ask the question, “when does it end?” Like will there be enough space for us to keep up with the amount of plastic that us humans use. Because it really does not seem like it. I absolutely do. There are literally plastic patches the size of Texas in our oceans that we physically cannot keep up with in order to clean because of its growth rate. People also do not care about the consequences until it is too late, this has always been human nature unfortunately. Honestly, the disposable water bottles I used are definitely changeable for like a Brita water filter and I can just use a water bottle like a Yeti or simply just use a glass of water. It would be difficult but definitely worth it. Society will never ever make a complete change in my opinion but I truly hope that I am wrong. I think humans relationship with plastic will definitely change over time because it literally has to if not then our planet and species will literally be extinct.
