Module 1 Reflection: Chapters 1-7. In this module, you reviewed several chapters related to descriptive statistics. It can be difficult to remember everything you learned and to understand how what you are learning is relevant to everyday life. To assist you in reviewing and reflecting upon the key concepts covered in this module, complete the following tasks:

    Part 1: Understanding & Learning

Identify concepts that you did not understand and/or that you want to learn more about from Chapters 1-7.

    Part 2: Relevancy Reflections

Take time to reflect on how the concepts that you have learned in this module are currently relevant and/or could be relevant to your future academic and professional endeavors. Be sure to provide support for your assertions.

    Formatting and Expectations

    • When formatting your reflection, use the headings Understanding & Learning and Relevancy Reflections to organize your writing.
    • A page limit is intentionally not provided. Once you have completed the assignment per the guidelines above, you should submit it (regardless of its length).

  • Writing Question

Module 1 Assignment: Descriptive Statistics. The assignments in this course are designed to assist you in applying the techniques you learned in the module to real-world scenarios. For this assignment, consider the following scenario:

You are part of a community in which there have been several disturbing incidents over the past few months. Some of the incidents involved damage to property, power outages, and animal cruelty. Your community has asked you to be a part of the committee that selects the inaugural Community Observation Patrol (COP) group. You have been asked to look at the files and provide the committee with information that will help select the inaugural COP members.

You will be analyzing the following variables located in the :

    • AGE
    • CONVICTD*
    • ESTVICRT!
    • WRKSTAT

    Part 1: Statistical Tasks

You will need to complete the following tasks to explore the issues discussed in the scenario.

Descriptive Statistics: Compute the following descriptive statistics for each variable:

    • Mean
    • Median
    • Mode
    • Range
    • Standard Deviation

Hint: You can use Excels Data Analysis Tool to compute descriptive statistics.

Frequency Distributions: Create frequency distributions for each variable. Be sure to include the proper labels for each variable category (class interval) and to include the percentage distributions.

Hint: Refer to the Infobase resources in this module and the site for examples of how to generate frequencies and compute percentages in Excel.

Charts: Create a pie, bar, line, or histogram chart for each variable. Be sure to include the proper labels for each variable category (class interval).

Hint: When creating charts, remember a variables scale of measurement can impact the type of chart used. In general, pie and bar charts are used for variables at the nominal and ordinal levels of measurement, and line and histogram charts are used for variables at the interval and ratio levels of measurement.

Correlations: Compute the correlation coefficient for each variable in one correlation matrix.

Hint: You can use Excels Data Analysis Tool to compute the correlation coefficients in a correlation matrix.

    Part 2: Summarize Your Findings

You need to provide a summary of your findings and an interpretation that helps the reader understand what your findings mean in relation to the issues you explored in the real-world scenario. To do this, include a summary of the descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, and correlations.

When summarizing central tendencies and variability use the following general guidelines:

    • Variables at the nominal level of measurement: mode, range
    • Variables at the ordinal level of measurement: median, range
    • Variables at the interval-ratio level of measurement: mean*, range, standard deviation. (*Remember that when a distribution is skewed, the median is a better measure of central tendency to use.)

Assume that the reader has already seen your work. Thus, do not provide a line-by-line description of each item. Instead provide a general summary (1-3 sentences) of each item. You can refer back to the text for examples of how to explain what the results of each statistical test means. Remember to use your own words. As a rule of thumb, if you are confused about what you wrote, your reader will most likely also be confused about what you wrote.

    Part 3: Show Your Work

When you submit your assignment, you must also show your work. To do this, include a copy of your computed descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, charts, and correlation matrix.

You can copy and paste your work into your assignment document or you can submit a copy of the Excel file containing your work.

    Purpose

This assignment will help you become aware of how writers and researchers review and become familiar with previous work on a topic before they begin additional research.

Skills: This assignment will help you practice skills essential to success in and beyond this course:

    • Locate a variety of scholarly print and digital sources that represent multiple perspectives on a topic.
    • Analyze sources by critically reading, annotating, engaging, comparing, and drawing implications.

Knowledge: This assignment will help you become familiar with the following important knowledge:

    • Methods for conducting research
    • Analytical reading and writing strategies

    Task

An annotated bibliography is an alphabetized list of source citations that includes an annotation underneath each entry. In your annotated bibliography, each of your source citations will include an annotation summarizing the source and describing the aim, purpose, and relevance to your research project. You will develop an annotated bibliography containing five academic sources as well as the annotations for each source. You should also include a brief description of your research topic.

Here is what your Annotated Bibliography should look like:

First, present your research topic. Make sure it is clear and specific. Include your research questions.

Annotations of Sources, 150-200 words per source

Gather at least five sources on your topic. Two of these sources must come from academic journals (peer-reviewed, scholarly, found using the KSU Library databases), but the others may come from credible newspapers and magazines. One of the sources may be chosen from a website, but this site should be from a reliable organization like The Associated Press or the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Articles from KSU Library databases are not considered website sources. Read and reread each source carefully. Once you have selected your sources and read them carefully, write annotations for each.

    Each annotation should . . .

    • Include a brief summary of the source.
    • Evaluate the source and its use in your research.
    • Discuss relation of the source to your other sources. Consider whether sources agree or disagree with/contradict each other.
    • Comment on the sources reliability.

Write citations in MLA, 9th edition, format. Summarize the articles using your own words. Be sure that your summaries are very different from the abstracts of the articles you have read. List your entries alphabetically and check them carefully for mistakes in MLA documentation.

    Formatting requirements

Follow MLA format for the document as well as the citations. Use black Calibri or Times New Roman font in size 12. Double-space the entire document. Use 1-inch margins on all sides.

    Criteria for Success

    General criteria:

    • The writing is clear and coherent/makes sense.
    • The tone and language are appropriate for the audience.
    • The writer has gone through the entire writing process, revising substantially and thoughtfully.
    • The writing adheres to grammar and punctuation rules.

At the beginning, you should . . .

    • Present your research topic.
    • Present your research questions.

In the source annotations section, you should . . .

    • Include at least five scholarly sources from reliable sources.
    • Alphabetize your entries.
    • Ensure each annotation includes complete and accurate works cited information following MLA format.
    • Briefly summarize each source.
    • Ensure each annotation contains an explanation of how the source will be used in your research project.
    • Note difference of opinions among sources.
    • Comment on the reliability of each source.
    • Ensure annotations are in your own words, not copied from abstracts or the source itself.
    • Ensure each annotation is 150-200 words.

The annotated bibliography should adhere to all formatting criteria:

    • Follow MLA format for all citations.
    • The entire document should be double-spaced.
    • The font should be Calibri or Times New Roman in size 12.
    • The margins should be one inch on all sides.
  • Reflecting on the Social Perception and DEI in Organizations

Recently, you were asked to watch a video on DEl in organizations and participated in a class lesson on this topic. Using what you have learned about the social perception process and DEl in organizations, please write a short reflection (3 to 5 pages) answering ALL elements of the following questions:

    1. Factors of the perceiver: a) How might your unique combination of social identities (e.g., your gender identity, racial identity, ethnicity, age, ability level, etc.) influence how you behave toward others in the workplace?

    2. Factors of the target: a) What kinds of identity-based stereotypes do you think might influence how people treat you/ interact with you at work? b) How might stereotypes of other identity groups affect how others with different identities from you are treated in the workplace

    3. Factors of the situation/context: a) What societal/cultural values and/or beliefs might shape how you interact with other people the most at work?

    b) Which societal/cultural values or beliefs do you think most influence how other people currently interact with you in general? Explain your answers.
