Purpose: The goal of this ongoing assignment is to help you apply key concepts from our course to a professional communication example. You might select a public speech, a clip from a show or movie, a TedTalk, or another professional communication example that you can cite (refer to “Application Log Inspiration” document for guidance on acceptable clips). Use this as an opportunity to explore clips or examples from the career or life path you are aiming to choose. Youll select five different chapters across the semester and write one application log for each. This will help you deepen your understanding of how theory connects to everyday communication and professional challenges.
Instructions:
- Choose one chapter we’ve covered in class (your instructor will set guidelines for which chapters to choose).
- Apply 3 course concepts from the “key terms” section at the beginning of each chapter. You will then apply those concepts to a communication example that you can cite.
- Reflect on how this theory helps you analyze, evaluate, or improve communication.
1. Select a Chapter and Concepts
Briefly identify the chapter you are drawing from and 3 key terms, theories, or frameworks from the reading. (e.g., “Chapter 4: Listening; understanding, responding, evaluating)
- What concept(s) are you focusing on and how are they defined?
- Why did you choose this topic for your application log?
2. Choose a Professional Communication Example
Pick a relevant communication scenario from public or professional setting.
- Who was involved?
- Why does this situation stand out?
- What happened?
3. Apply Course Concepts
Analyze your example through the lens of the selected chapter concepts.
For each concept:
- Define it
- Show how it played out in your example (Was it used well? Poorly? Missing?).
- Explain how the concept helps you understand or assess the communication more deeply.
4. Reflection
- What did you learn about communication through this example?
- How would you act differently in the future after learning this concept?
- Why does this concept matter in professional contexts like teamwork, leadership, ethics, or presentations?
Tips for Success:
- Refer to the rubric for specific grading
- You may not repeat the same chapter for multiple logs.
- You must write five logs total across the semester
- Each log should be 1-2 pages max (single-spaced)
- Submit each log by the assigned deadlines for full credit (refer to syllabus for late-work grading policy)
