If you are facilitating this weeks discussion, select a topic area from the weeks readings or learning resources. Prepare a Discussion Starter.
A sample Discussion Starter is as follows:
Studies have shown that, in processing significant amounts of information during an initial session, counselors run the risk of forming erroneous impressions of a client (e.g., Hilton & Darley, 1991; Snyder & Stukas, 1999) that are later subject to confirmation bias. Additionally, research has also demonstrated that clients may unintentionally seek to affirm a counselors bias, leading to a type of self-fulfilling prophecy in the therapeutic relationship (Fazio, Effrein, & Falender, 1981).
Based upon this weeks readings, what do you think are the most effective, evidence-based practices in which you can engage to avoid this dynamic in your own counseling sessions?
These are the readings for this week:
Read Chapter 10-12 of Personal Counseling Skills: An Integrative Approach.
Read Chapter 7 of Clinical Interviewing.
Come up with a question for my classmates to respond to in a discussion. A “discussion starter” question. There should be a small paragraph overview of the question. Please see example above.
