Assignment Title: Culturally Humble Nursing Care: Understanding Health Beliefs, Communication, and Health Promotion in a Selected Culture

Purpose:

The purpose of this assignment is to guide you in developing a deeper understanding of the impact of culture on the provision of nursing care and the responsibility of a nurse to be culturally humble in order to provide the best individualized care to people. Further, it is developed to guide you in improving your capacity to rely on professional values, education, experience and research to learn about a chosen culture and enhance knowledge, cultural humility and sensitivity, and improve scholarly research and writing skills. You will examine a specific culture and focus on health promotion issues, cultural considerations and incorporate best practice methods of communication.

Assignment Overview:

You will select a culture other than your own to address challenges that might occur when providing nursing care and identify multiple solutions to address them. Remember, the definition of culture includes learned, shared patterns of behavior, values, beliefs, treatment understanding, often intersecting with ethnicity and impacting disparities. Culture is more specific than race/ethnicity. Race and ethnicity can be used to identify groups facing disparities, but culture explains WHY health outcomes differ. For example, culture impacts healthcare as it can impact a persons understanding of illness, willingness to ask questions, pain expression, and acceptance of treatments. This paper is expected to be researched and include at least three (3) peer-reviewed references within the last five (5) years of publication from the Baruch Library.

Assignment Requirements:

Your 5-7 page paper (not including title and reference pages) must address the following components:

1. Cultural Overview:

• Describe the selected cultures values, beliefs, and worldview related to health, illness, family, and healing.
• Discuss the cultures traditional communication styles (verbal/non-verbal), including preferences that may affect the nurse-patient relationship. Provide multiple examples.

2. Impact of Social Determinants of Health:

• Analyze and demonstrate how specific social determinants (e.g., income, education, housing, language, legal status) impact health outcomes in this cultural group.
• Integrate how systemic racism or historical marginalization may have contributed to distrust in the U.S. healthcare system into your analysis.

3. Health Promotion and Nursing Challenges:

• Identify at least two health promotion issues or challenges commonly experienced by this group (for example, chronic conditions, access to preventive care, mental health stigma).
• Discuss potential barriers nurses may encounter when promoting health and delivering care to patients from this culture. Provide multiple examples.

4. Cultural Humility and Professional Practice:

• Reflect on the concept of cultural humility versus cultural competence in nursing and describe your personal understanding.
• Describe how nurses can use professional values, evidence-based practice, and self-reflection to provide equitable care. Provide multiple examples.

5. Integrating Culturally Appropriate Practices:

• Identify at least two traditional or culturally accepted health practices from the group that may complement Western care (e.g., herbal remedies, spiritual practices, family decision-making).
• Discuss how a nurse might integrate these practices respectfully and safely into providing individualized clinical care to a person from that culture.

6. Scholarly Support:

• Use at least three independently researched peer-reviewed sources published within the past 5 years to support your analysis and best practices from the Baruch Library.
• All statistics must be from reputable governmental websites – NO .com sites permitted to be used for reference
• APA 7th edition formatting is required for a student paper.
• Review Chapter 2, 8, 9, and 10 in the APA Manual for the guidelines for formatting a student paper.
