Assignment: Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Lesson Plan

For this assignment, you will design a lesson plan through the lens of critical pedagogy and the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Your goal is to create a lesson that considers every member of your classroom communitytheir unique backgrounds, lived experiences, and ways of engaging, accessing, and expressing learning.

If Youre a Classroom Teacher

Create a lesson plan for a content area and grade level of your choice that demonstrates inclusive and accessible design, multiple means of engagement and expression, and is culturally responsive to the individuals in your school. You may wish to design something you can actually use in your classroom or include in your APPR portfolio this year.

Assignment Guidelines

Please review the sample lesson plans and lesson plan rubric (linked below) before starting your work.

Your submission should:

  • Highlight multiple strategies for student engagement
  • Include key learning activities, digital resources, and class materials
  • Include a paragraph for me as the reader about how this lesson connects to our learning this term and a reference list.
  • Contain enough detail and supporting artifacts to resemble what you would turn in to your principal if they requested your lesson materials. (You dont need every single document, but your submission should reflect a well-planned, authentic lesson.)

Clarification: You are not “teaching a lesson on critical race theory to children, which can be a fear of those outside of education. This assignment is a chance to practice writing a lesson that uses your gained consideration of the diversity in our classrooms as a result of our study this term to make your content/curriculum accessible and meaningful to the individuals in your classroom community.

Lesson Plan Requirements

Your lesson must:

  • Be aligned with NYS Standards or Next Generation Learning Standards
  • Include an authentic and engaging learning activity
  • Apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles
  • Be culturally appropriate (critical pedagogy) and grounded for the learners in your classroom
  • Demonstrate backward planning (clear learning target at the start and aligned formative/summative assessment that demonstrates student learning)
  • Connect to the big picture of cultural responsiveness, diversity, and community building. For example: show how this lesson fits into a multicultural unit, a series of lessons, or a school-wide event celebrating diversity

Please remember that I am a middle school and high school art teacher. Please make this lesson a fun and engaging project that students will actually want to complete!!!
