In the week two journal, will consider the question, “Is poverty a form of deviance or a cause — or both?
Choose two theories of deviance that discuss poverty as 1) a form of deviance and 2) as a cause of deviance. Write one paragraph on each position using your chosen theories. Then in one paragraph, evaluate the strengths of each argument. Please see example, below the list of theories, at the bottom of this post.
*Robert Mertons Anomie and Strain Theory
*Labeling Theory”
*Stigma”
“Structural Functional Theory”
“Conflict Theory”
“Symbolic Interactionism”
“Social Disorganization Theory”
“Self-Control Theory”
Example: The following is an example of what I am looking for for your first post. However, I am using a theory not included in the list above, Social Integration Theory. I am also using the theory to explain gang behavior not poverty. You will need to choose your own theory from the list above and focus on the question of poverty.
In my opinion, Social Integration Theory explains the emergence of gangs in South Central Los Angeles. Social Integration Theory focuses on the degree to which an individual is integrated into society, and also takes into account the degree of regulation that person experiences. In South Central LA in the 1960s, young African American men had a very high degree of regulation – there were many police officers monitoring their behavior in everyday life, and they felt overly constricted by all of the rules the police were subjecting them to. The felt integrated into their neighborhood, but not so much into the greater LA society, from which they felt cut off and excluded. They weren’t even allowed to join the Boy Scouts troop in their neighborhood! Social Integration theory suggest that too little integration paired with too high of regulation, with too many rules and regulations to follow, will lead to acts of deviance. For this reason, I think this theory explains the emergence of gangs and gang related deviance in South Central LA.
