- Do you think all communities and/or cultures consider this behavior or way of being as deviant?
- Considering the readings for this week, why do you think this behavior or way of being has come to be defined as deviant?
- Is there any other way of looking at it?
A good example of socially constructed deviance, which you may not use for this assignment, is abortion. Abortion has been legal in the United States since 1973. However, some states have imposed local restrictions outlawing abortions. Why is abortion more legal in some states and less in others where women are made to feel deviant? Why do you think in the span of fifty years, abortion has come to be defined as deviant by 49% of Americans, according to Goode (p. 11)? And how and why is abortion fully acceptable, i.e., “not deviant” in some areas of the country? What are the different viewpoints on abortion – is one right? In 2024, only 33% of Americans feel abortion should be illegal.
Key to discussing your example of deviant behavior is to explore how deviance is conceptualized, defined, enacted, and represented and how these conceptualizations, definitions, enactments, and representations are embodied or constituted. 200 words minimum
