Discussion 2 parts

  1. In what ways can poverty be considered a form of deviance? In what ways do our definitions of deviance not fit the condition of being poor? (200 words)
  2. How is the category of crime distinguished from the general concept of deviance? Are the two concepts separate and distinct, or are there some attitudes, behaviors, and conditions that may be shaded a darker grey in color? In your answer, consider the establishment of common and statutory law in the U.S. and the process of codifying attitudes, behaviors, and characteristics considered detrimental to society into law. Also consider the differential punishment and the prison system in your answer. Also, try to address how a positivist approach may differ from a constructionist approach in addressing this distinction. (200 words) Please reference the slides attached from the Textbook
