Professional nursing practice exists within a broader social and healthcare system context. Nurses have a social contract with society that includes providing safe, ethical, and culturally responsive care while advocating for patients and communities. Understanding cultural competence, access to care, and emerging societal trends allows nurses to address health disparities and promote equitable healthcare. In addition, knowledge of healthcare delivery systems and organizational theory helps nurses understand how healthcare institution’s function and how leadership, structure, and collaboration influence patient outcomes.
For this discussion, reflect on the role of nurses within the healthcare system and society and address the following questions:
- Explain the concept of the social contract in nursing and discuss how it shapes the professional responsibilities of nurses to patients and society.
- Discuss the importance of cultural competence and cultural humility in nursing practice. How do these concepts contribute to improving patient-centered care and reducing health disparities?
- Analyze the issue of access to care and identify one societal factor that may influence healthcare access for certain populations.
- Describe one societal trend (such as aging populations, technological advancements, or increasing chronic disease) that is currently influencing healthcare and nursing practice.
- Explain how organizational theory can help nurses understand healthcare delivery systems and improve collaboration, leadership, and patient outcomes within healthcare organizations.
