Discussion 6 – LEAM 4000

Discussion Week 6

  • Initiate a discussion on the role of technology in impacting patient safety. Encourage students to explore various technologies used in healthcare settings, such as electronic health records (EHRs), barcode medication administration systems, and telemedicine. Share personal experiences or scenarios where technology played a crucial role in enhancing or potentially compromising patient safety.
  • Define the core components of informatics: data, information, and knowledge. Discuss how these components are interconnected and contribute to informed decision-making in healthcare.
  • Compare and contrast different types of technology for capturing data at the point of care, such as handheld devices, wearable technology, and bedside monitors. Evaluate their advantages and disadvantages in supporting clinical practice.
  • Share examples of how decision support systems, such as clinical decision support software, have impacted patient care in your lived experience. Discuss how these systems assist healthcare professionals in making evidence-based decisions and preventing errors.
  • Explore the ethical considerations and information security and privacy issues related to healthcare information technology. Discuss the importance of maintaining patient confidentiality and safeguarding electronic health information.
