Engineering Question

KB5031 Semester 2: Summative Writing Assessment 2026

Using only the sources studied in class, and the reading table write 250-300 words in formal academic style in response to the following situation, entitled:

A report evaluating solutions to problems of climate change via sustainable energy transition

Climate change is recognised as a serious global problem (IPCC, 2022). The burning of fossil fuels has been established as a major cause of this phenomenon. Thus, IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) recommends reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 (NRDC, 2023). Many countries have committed to reducing their carbon emissions in order to reach this target (as of November 2023, about 145 countries had signed up to or are considering net zero targets, accounting for almost 90% of global emissions. Among these are China, the EU, the USA, and India, who together account for more than half of global greenhouse gas emissions (Climate Action Tracker, 2023). Many governments and companies are working on ways to convert to sustainable energy supplies.

As an engineer working with the Gulf Energy Authority (a transnational public-private partnership working in primarily in the Middle East and North Africa), your task is to write a brief report for stakeholders explaining possible solutions to sustainable energy transition in the region. You will need to provide background information on the situation, describe and evaluate (pros and cons) of different technological methods to transition to sustainable energy supplies and make a recommendation based on your evaluation. You need to write in formal, academic style. Your report should be based on the texts studied this semester and you will need to provide in-text citations and a reference list.

Notes:

  • Your answer should be written and saved as a MS Word document.
  • You must include your name, student number, ALS module code, tutor name and the title of the assessment as you can see in the example below:
  • You must save your document file as follows:

Name: Joanne Smith

Student number: 11077123

Module Code: KL5001

Tutor: Dr Jane Carnaffan

Formative Writing Assessment

A report evaluating solutions to problems of climate change via sustainable energy transition

File name: your ALS class code, day and time of class, FAMILY NAME and Formative, like this: KB5031 _ Monday_13_ SMITH_FORMATIVE

  • You must also put the same formula in the subject box of your Turn-it-in submission
  • You must not exceed the word limit. Your tutor will stop reading your work after this limit.
  • Structure your response as follows:

Introduction (Situation/problem)

Evaluation of solutions (Advantages/Disadvantages)

Conclusion (Recommendation(s))

We are looking for a mini-report which answers the assessment brief, that is, discusses the subject critically, by integrating the sources studied in class into your own writing. We are not looking for separate descriptive summaries of the sources.

Provide in-text citations and references at the end of your writing (Harvard or IEEE style).

Complete the task in your own time (suggested time limit 2 hours).

Do not use AI to complete the task.

Include the completed reading table in your Word document.

You have the chance of submitting a practice submission (to the Practice folder) before submitting your final submission (to the Final Folder) in order to check your Turn-it-in score and improve your work. You will not be able to see your AI score.

Deadline: 23:59 Friday 27th March 2026
