Evidence Synthesis Table to answer PICOT Question

  1. Finding Evidence:
    • Select four individual references related to the selected practice problem. The references must be less than five years old and include the following: (a) an evidence-based clinical practice guideline; (b) a systematic review or meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (Level I); (c) a publication presenting the results for a randomized controlled trial (Level II); and (d) an article presenting the research findings for a study that provides evidence rated as Level III, IV, V, or VI. (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, p. 18, Box 1.3)
  2. Match one of the templates below with each of the articles you have selected. Compile all 4 completed templates table into a single document.
    • Include the requested content for each column of the table template (keep the landscape orientation).
    • Do NOT quote content or merely change a few words found in the literature sentences.
    • Use 10-point font (Times New Roman typically uses less space) and limit the lines of narrative for each study to one half to three-fourths of a page (width of columns can be changed to comply with the page requirement).
    • On each row of the template, use APA format for references in a reference list.
  3. Appraising Evidence:
    • Appraisal of Research
      • Use your readings and critical appraisal checklists to help you understand the research methods used in your articles
    • Appraisal of Guidelines
      1. Agree II Tool is designed specifically for appraising guidelines. To access a user-friendly form of the AGREE II Tool vs. using the PDF form provided with the AGREE II Tool Manual, go to and create an account.
      2. The website guides users through the whole process and provides the option to type the rationale for each score into the comments section. The website makes completing the guideline analysis process very easy!
        1. Select a score of 1-7 points to grade each section.
        2. State the rationale for selecting each score.
        3. When completed, the whole Agree II Tool will be formatted for users to save as a PDF.
      3. Write a paragraph summary of what each research partner learned about the strength of evidence of the selected evidence based guideline and the AGREE II Tool. State if you would or would not use this guideline and provide your rationale. This summary should fit on the completed row in the evidence synthesis table for a guideline.
      4. Add a conclusion at the end of the table in the template that discusses the synthesis of the findings in all four articles in relation to the answer to the PICOT question. Provide a statement about using or not using the synthesis of finding across the articles to make clinical decisions. Provide a rationale to support your clinical decision.
      5. Your paper should include a statement or notation on the table indicating the specific contribution of each research partner to this group assignment. Each research partner should take responsibility for locating 2 of the 4 required articles and be the primary appraiser for both articles.
