Goal To synthesize literature on a specific topic to draw conclusions and make recommendations.

For this class, each student will write a literature review over a topic of interest. For this assignment we will blend elements of a systematic literature review and those of a practical literature review. The purpose of this is to establish a systematic process for selecting, evaluating, and including articles to answer the research question, while also providing practical recommendations for using the information in the literature review. This assignment should be written following research writing and systematic literature review format guidelines presented in class. This assignment will include the following sections of a systematic literature review (plus one for this class only; #7):

  1. Ancillary pages (cover page and table of contents)
  2. Abstract
  3. Introduction
  4. Methodology including search strategy and inclusion criteria
  5. Results including a table
  6. Discussion
  7. Practical Applications/Recommendations
  8. Reference list

Requirements:

  • Topic:
    • Your topic must be one from a sub-discipline within exercise science. Nutrition or wellness topics should not be considered.
    • Your topic must be approved in advance by the instructor in writing (email is appropriate). There is not a due date for this, but well in advance is recommended to give you sufficient time to complete the assignment.
  • Sources:
    • A minimum of 25 scholarly sources are required for this assignment.
    • At least 20 must be primary sources (as defined by APA) reviewed in the literature review.
  • Proper Citation
    • Sources must be properly cited in APA format. The reference list must match in-text citations. All articles cited in text must be cited in the reference list. All articles in the reference list must be cited in text.
    • Failure to properly cite all sources used in the literature review is considered plagiarism.
  • Format
    • APA format as described in the Publication Manual (7th edition) is required for all parts of this assignment.
    • Written in the format of a systematic literature review with the addition of recommendations for practice

  • Gives 3 specific recommendations or ways the information in the review can be used
  • Recommendations are specific, practical, and clearly based on the results of the review
  • One recommendation can be for future study or a clear statement of what we cannot recommend at this point.

Format

  • Minimum of 25 sources are cited; at least 20 of those are primary sources included in the results section.
  • Topic approved in advance; all articles relate to the topic and to each other.
  • Well-written, easy to read, logically organized; flows well from topic to topic.
  • APA format is used throughout including the reference list, in-text citations, headings, abbreviations, statistical results, etc.
