Assignment Instructions:
- Choose at least one movement from each of these symphonies. This means that your report should include one movement from Beethoven’s Eroica, one movement from Shostakovich’s Symphony no. 5, and one movement from Copland’s Appalachian Spring. (Remember that a movement in a symphony is like a chapter in a book – it has a clearly defined beginning and end but functions as a section of a larger work.)
- Watch the historical context section and in your own words, briefly describe the background to the symphony. Include at least three timestamps in referencing specific details.
- Then listen to the entire movement and describe what you hear! Does your listening experience match the descriptions given in the historical context section? How does the music make you feel personally?
- Remember to use the musical vocabulary that weve been learning this semester – what elements of music stand out to you? (Example: instrumentation, texture, dynamics, melody, rhythm, harmony, etc.) As always, be specific in your observations.
- Minimum word count for this assignment is 500 words.
