Overview

The semester long project is designed to help integrate the concepts in each module. Last module, you found the distribution of your health problem. This week, you will continue to relate the module’s topic of epidemiology.

This week the topic is: Finding the Determinants of your chosen health problem (the why factors)

Why Are Some Populations More At Risk?

We started looking at the pattern of your chosen health problem in the last unit using Biostatistics and Epidemiology. We have the who and what but need to figure out some of the whys. To do this, we now need to add in the determinants of your problem. What are the associated factors that may DETERMINE if a person is more likely to have your problem? Why do some people have more risk for the problem? Understanding the determinants will help you to address these issues to prevent or reduce the problem.

Preparation

Here is a review of some categories of determinants. Some overlap, some are interdependent and different sources describe them slightly differently. The module describes this more, so please refer back to it if you need help. In the presentation you need to address how these determinants impact your chosen problem:

  • Behavior
  • Genetics
  • Policy
  • Social Determinants of Health (SDoH)

Do your own research to find the determinants for your problem. Some tips are to just search:

Behavioral contribution to (your problem)

Genetics of (your problem)

Instructions

  1. Once you do the research above to prepare, you will create two more slides and add them to the end of your presentation.
  2. Use the instructions in the template and my example for additional guidance.
  3. For the summary slide, start focusing on a feasible group to address and where they live, work and play. This slide needs to use data from the LAST TWO steps, integrating both the distribution and the determinants. What group interests you to work with? Think age, SES, gender etc.
  4. Then SUMMARIZE the two slides from this week in simple terms. LOOK at my example. If it is more complex than this, you will not get credit
  5. Add the new slides to your presentation to continue to build your project.

What You Need to Accomplish

  1. Create 3 mores slides from the templates
  2. Determinant Slide: Identify a Behavioral a Genetic determinant. Fill out each category with facts, numbers and labels.
  3. SDoH Slide: Identify a socioeconomic, healthcare access and community/home social determinant of health. Fill out each category with facts, numbers and labels.
  4. Determinant Summary Slide: Choose a population, a behavioral and a social determinant to address in your population. This area should not offer new information but be a distillation of the two prior steps.
  5. All Slides: fact(s) must be properly noted on the slide with in-text citations
  6. Have a reference slide at the end.
  7. Follow the template and format
  8. Upload ALL the slides starting with the title slide from Step 1 including every Step through the ones added this week.
