BOOK REVIEW ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS

OVERVIEW

Objectively reviewing the work of others is an invaluable skill for future scholars. Writing a

critical assessment of a scholarly book allows you to practice objectively critiquing the work of

others and helps you become a more engaged and critical scholar.

The goal of every scholar is to publish peer-reviewed work. The skills necessary to review and

critique anothers work form the foundation upon which you will build your own written and

analytical skills.

Before you begin writing your review, read the book in its entirety and take notes as you read.

Note the key themes of the book, the authors stated purpose in writing the book, and any other

key information about the book that is relevant to your review. Be sure to include page numbers

in your notes so you can easily go back to the relevant sections as you write.

INSTRUCTIONS

In this Book Review Assignment, you will critically assess one academic book related to Public

Policy from the books list provided to you. Your Book Review Assignment should:

  • Include an opening statement that peaks the readers interest in the book under review;
  • Identify the central thesis of the book;
  • Assess the main themes of the book;
  • Explain any methods used to support the themes of the book;
  • o State whether the method is quantitative or qualitative and give a brief

    explanation of the methodological approach.

  • Explain and evaluate the conclusions drawn by the books author(s);
  • o Assess whether the conclusions drawn seem sound based on the data they present.

    o Identify any weaknesses or oversights of the book.

  • Evaluate the books place within the field of public policy.
  • o how does the book build upon or fit within the public policy themes you have

    studied so far in this course?

    o Provide specific examples and citations from course readings to support your

    evaluation.

    Your Book Review Assignment should be presented in current APA format. It should be 1,500

    to 2,000 words in length, not including title page, footnotes/endnotes, abstract, or bibliography. It

    should avoid long, block quotes of the book and summarize key themes in your own words
