You will write a 1500-word research paper based on Herman Melvilles famous essay Hawthorne and His Mosses (1266). Along with his in-depth analysis of Hawthornes fiction, Melville also argues for the necessity of American writers creating a unique national literature.
I have attached a link to a thorough article by Laurie Sterling about numerous ways to write about Melvilles essay. Search her piece for possible ideas for your paper. You must use Melvilles essay as one of your sources. Most students choose to use Melvilles opinions as a way to approach and analyze a specific story or stories by Hawthorne, Melville, Irving, or Poe. You might want to compare / contrast two stories by the same or different authors. Dont try to cover too much ground. It is better to
say a lot about a little than a little about a lot.
Our school subscribes to Blooms Literature, an excellent database that you can access by following this link: . The How to write about. . . section includes numerous essays about the above authors. You must use at least one of the essays you find there to support and develop your paper. Each one has a citation link that you should use to ensure proper MLA documentation and so that you can reference authors by name in your paper. You may argue against the experts opinions or use them to supplement your own. You might also find useful information in the database that Mr. Biggs discussed in class: Short Stories for Students.
It is vital that you come up with a strong, specific thesis and a coherent, logical outline for your paper. Blooms Literature has a marvelous text, also by Sterling, that provides clear, concise tips for planning and writing a research paper, including a sample paper about Hawthornes The Birth-Mark.
