Interphase prepares the cell (G1 growth, S DNA replication, G2 preparation). Mitosis is divided into prophase (chromosome condensation, nuclear membrane disappears), metaphase (chromosomes line up in the middle), anaphase (chromatids separate towards the poles), and telophase (two nuclei are formed). Cytokinesis divides the cytoplasm, creating two identical diploid daughter cells.
