This assignment aligns with CLOs #4 and 5 and should take approximately 30-60 minutes.
Introduction
The purpose of this assignment is for you to connect developmental theories (Piaget, Vygotsky, Erikson, and Kohlberg) to real-world examples of how children and adolescents think, behave, and interact.
Assignment Options (Choose ONE)
- Option 1 Direct Observation
Observe a child or adolescent that you know, with parental consent if needed. This could be a family member, neighbor, or friend. Take notes on their behavior, language, play, or problem-solving.
- Option 2 Video/Film Analysis
If you dont have access to a child, choose a video, documentary, or movie that includes scenes of a child or adolescent. Examples include: Inside Out (child emotions), Matilda (early school-age development), Wonder (peer relationships and social identity), Boyhood or The Florida Project (adolescent development). You may also use YouTube clips, educational documentaries, or parenting videos.
Instructions
Write a short 1/2 – 1-page report (about 200400 words) that includes:
- Description of the child/adolescent:
Approximate age, setting, and key behaviors observed.
- Connections to theory:
Identify two developmental theories (e.g., Piagets stage, Vygotskys ZPD, Eriksons psychosocial stage, or Kohlbergs moral reasoning) and explain how they relate to what you observed.
- Teaching implications:
Reflect on how understanding this behavior would help you as a future teacher. In other words, how would you support or challenge this students development?
