Instructions
Objective: The assignment is design to heighten your self-awareness about the factors which shaped your understanding of gender. By reflecting on your gender identity and past experiences, you will better understand your own perceptions, behaviors and communication.
Format: 750 words, 1.5 spacing, Times New Roman 11, Essay format
Prompts: Choose 3 categories.
1) Family
- Who were the most influential models of gender during your upbringing?
- How do you believe these role models impacted how you perform gender based on your sex? (e.g., interests, hobbies, appearance, your goals in the future)
2) Close personal relationships
- Reflect on your friendships. Do you gravitate more towards one sex and why?
- Are there any differences in the way you communicate with friends depending on their gender?
- Can you apply your knowledge of masculine and feminism communication models to improve your close personal relationship?
3) Media and social media
- Which were the primary sources of media that informed you about gender during early childhood, adolescence, and college?
- How have they impacted how you learned how to be masculine or feminine (e.g., roles, expectations, appearance, relationships)?
Last Tips
- This is NOT meant to judge your feminist viewpoint nor will you be graded on it.
- Be SPECIFIC as possible and provide concrete PERSONAL examples!!!
- You will be graded on your ability to reflect on aspects of communication and gender which we have learned and how they impact your identity and experiences.
Grading Criteria (0-5 for each)
- Content and instructions: Student includes answers to all prompts. Coherent, easy to read and academic style writing.
- Critical thinking: Provides a critical analysis that connects the academic content to your life experiences.
- Thick description: Details, details, details. Concrete description and details are provided in your examples demonstrating an effort to understand oneself.
- Original thought: Uniqueness of your ideas! Original ideas that go beyond what has already been discussed in class.
