Step 1
Hot diggity dogone major social issue impacting my community is housing instability and the increasing number of individuals and families struggling to afford safe and stable housing. This issue affects a wide range of people, including low-income families, seniors, and veterans, and is becoming more visible as rent prices continue to rise while wages remain relatively stagnant. The lack of affordable housing options creates stress, displacement, and long-term financial hardship for many individuals in the community.
I appreciate the opportunity to provide a summary of my proposal addressing housing instability in our community. To guide my approach, I am applying conflict theory, a sociological perspective that focuses on how inequalities in power and resources contribute to social problems. This theory is particularly useful in understanding housing instability because it highlights how economic disparities and limited access to affordable housing disproportionately impact vulnerable populations.
Using conflict theory, housing instability can be viewed as a structural issue rather than simply an individual challenge. Factors such as rising housing costs, limited affordable housing development, and wage inequality contribute to this problem. This perspective allows us to examine how policies and economic systems may favor certain groups while disadvantaging others. While conflict theory is effective in identifying systemic inequalities and advocating for change, it may not fully account for individual behaviors or smaller-scale community solutions. In contrast, perspectives like functionalism may focus more on how housing systems contribute to overall societal stability rather than addressing inequalities directly.
Based on this framework, my proposal includes expanding affordable housing initiatives, strengthening tenant protection policies, and increasing access to supportive services such as employment assistance and healthcare resources. Additionally, forming partnerships with community organizations will be essential in both addressing immediate needs and working toward long-term structural solutions. This approach ensures that we are not only responding to the issue but also addressing its root causes.
