Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave”

After reading the allegory of the cave, explain the difference between reality (The Forms) and appearance (visible things). Why are visible things not really real for Plato? What makes the Forms real?

It’s okay to express confusion on this–I’ll be able to jump in and answer questions throughout the week.

Example 1

In The Allegory of the Cave, explains that there is a difference between appearance and reality. The visible things we see with our eyes are only appearances, like the shadows on the cave wall. They change, grow old, and can be destroyed, so they are not fully real. For Plato, true reality is the Forms, which are perfect, unchanging ideas that exist beyond the physical world. For example, many objects can be called beautiful, but the Form of Beauty itself is perfect and never changes. Visible things are only imperfect copies of these perfect Forms. That is why Plato says the Forms are truly real, while the physical world is only a reflection or shadow of the real truth.

Example 2

In my opinion, what Plato is trying to convey is that individuals bring about their own realities by means of the things that they are able to perceive. But it’s possible that they aren’t seeing everything that they ought to be seeing. There are instances when it is difficult to see things that are situated in front of us. It is necessary for us to be able to observe what is going on around us at times. Plato thought that our limitations were connected to the things that we have a tendency to observe rather than the things that we actually take in. Additionally, he is of the opinion that we take in the outside aspect of things without fully comprehending what it could possibly represent. Sometimes we are unable to see the whole reality of the things that are going on around us. As a consequence of this, we are under the impression that they do not exist.

Example 3

While going through the concept of the Allegory of the Cave, I was able to understand that plato does not see the visible as real seeing as it may not fully provide one the sense of reality. For example, the shadows and the shapes that were brought out within the caves– it visually provided the forms of animals and people, which led to the prisoners to let their imagination bring it them to life. On the other hand, the reality was that they were only visually seeing those figures, which is a huge difference from actually being there and seeing the figures be alive. The individual that left the cave brings that sense to the attention of the audience as he goes into the real world, to check and experience reality’s sensations (e.g plants, sunlight, water reflections). This is what Plato meant for the forms to be real as opposed to the visual that may only be brought to life with the imagination of a person.
