Understanding The Community: Social Work in Urban Versus Rural Settings
Consider a client who lives in a rural community. How might their experience as a humanand as a social work clientbe different from a client in an urban area?
Every day, social workers adapt to the setting in which they practice, including the inherent challenges, benefits, and complexities of that setting. How has the location of your field agency influenced your work? How are policies and service delivery impacted and informed by the setting?
In this Discussion, you examine the rural or urban community in which your field agency is placed.
To prepare:
- Review the Learning Resources on urban and rural settings in social work.
- Think about the community in which your field agency is situated.
Main Assignment: Post
- Describe the community you are serving as urban or rural, and justify your choice.
- How does the type of community impact service delivery, access, and outcomes?
- What are barriers to your clients receiving services based on the urban/rural setting?
- What are the benefits or facilitators in the urban/rural setting in terms of receiving services?
Reflect to one colleague whose agency is in the opposite type of community.
- Compare the impact on service delivery, access, and outcomes to theirs.
- Offer a suggestion for how your colleague could advocate to address one or more of the barriers they discussed.
