3.1 Discussion: Pre-Writing and Research Topic

In the first two weeks of the course, you were introduced to the narrative, a writing genre or strategy. This week, you will begin working on your final Research Paper – a cause/effect essay! Cause/effect essays help writers explain why something happens, what happens as a result, or both. Writers must make intentional choices about purpose and audience. This assignment will help you consider those choices before drafting.

In your original post, answer the following:

  • Briefly describe the issue, trend, event, or phenomenon you are interested in researching
  • Explain why this topic is appropriate for a cause/effect essay
  • Determine whether you will primarily focus on causes or effects
  • Using Popplet, LucidChart or another organizational tool that you’re familiar with, attach an image of brainstorming or mind mapping you’ve completed for your Research Paper.
  • You should focus on multiple causes and effects for your topic and highlight their relationships (see below)
