Final Project due: Weds, 3/25 at 11:59 P.M.

For our final ASAM 11 project, please choose a topic or issue related to Asian Americans and racism that you’d like to learn more about. It could be something that was briefly mentioned in our text or other materials that you’d like to learn more about, or it could be something you’ve heard about in another class or experienced in part of your life that you’d like to dig into more. Please cite at least 2 outside, academic Asian American Studies sources, reference some of the concepts/theories/ideas we’ve discussed, and propose a solution or means of taking action. You may use as many sources from this class as you’d like.

Possible topics:

  • Southeast Asian criminalization and deportation;
  • Asian American domestic workers, or care workers;
  • Immigrant rights and the role of Asian Americans in current immigration policies, or how Asian American are impacted currently by immigration policies;
  • Asian Americans and sports
  • affirmative action and Asian Americans
  • how redlining affects Asian American communities; or similarly, how ethnic enclaves shape Asian American communities
  • Asian American entrepreneurship
  • social media portrayal of Asian Americans
  • intersectional identities: how sexuality, gender, ability, mental health, or other identities intersect with Asian American identity

Directions:

  1. as a one paragraph write-up (already submitted).
  2. Format options:
    1. Video and Slide Presentation Requirements for an infographic or presentation are: must include citations (see below), a short outline or written portion with your research or findings, and an 8-minute video presentation where you are describing and commenting on the infographic or presentation. You do NOT need to do a video presentation if you are presenting live in class. If you are working in a group, this presentation should be at least 15 minutes, or minimum about 6 mins per group member.
    2. Infographic / Poster Board
    3. Submit a 4-5 page (at minimum 4 full pages, double-spaced, 800 words), typed, double-spaced essay here. I’d recommend this version for any of you who are intending to transfer to a 4-year college and major in social sciences, in order to give yourself practice conducting research and doing college-level research writing.
  3. Citations and References: Your final submission must include both in-text citations and a References list. You must cite evidence from at least 2 outside sources that you found yourself. You may also use class readings or materials and include a minimum of 5 in-text citations and a separate references page in APA (or other) citation format.
  4. Proofread for spelling, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation.
  5. If you are working in a group, you MUST also submit a separate statement (1-page) detailing what part of the work you completed individually and your reflections on working as a group.

Methodology Options:

  1. Social science research: includes multiple sources, including data sources, and analysis. For example, you would include some academic sources as your short literature review and data, and in your conclusion, you would present courses of action.
  2. Critical Autoethnography: in many ways, this would be an extension of your midterm racial autobiography assignment. Please include some of the concepts in this class to reflect on and apply them to your own experiences and identity.
  3. Cultural Production & Analysis: this could be artwork, a creative piece, a dance, music, or something else you’ve created. This would also need to include a writeup/reflection explaining to me the theories and concepts you’ve incorporated in your cultural production.
