    Upon selecting a work of art to write on either virtually or locally, carefully taking down the vital information (artist, title, date, medium, and estimated size). Observe and study this piece thoroughly. Note that your paper should have a concise introduction and a conclusion.

    Your report will begin with the following identifying information (Identification) centered neatly on the cover page:

  • Medium and dimensions of the piece
  • Name of museum collection or public site

(Be sure to mention the piece itself as you explain what it is you like about it and what it means to you.) Do you feel that this work serves its community/intended audience? Please explain, and make sure to consider the relationships/roles of the patron, artist, and viewer for the chosen work.

    III. Visual Elements & Principles of Design. Using formal terminology name and describe the important visual elements and principles of design that appear in this work (Formal Structure). Be sure to describe how these elements and principles function in the work (hint: discuss only form, not the content or subject). Physical Properties and techniques should also be addressed in this section.

    IV. Subject & Content. Briefly describe the Subject Matter of this work and elaborate fully on how you perceive its content. Discuss all themes that apply. Explain how subject, any present iconography (Symbolism), and themes work together to convey content. Don’t forget to consider Cultural Context in this section. How does this work compare with other works that address the ethical or social justice issue depicted? Make sure to include examples and discuss possible solutions.
