RQ #4: The 1920s in the United States were marked by a surge of nativism, or intense favoritism toward native-born Americans over immigrants. This sentiment arose in response to rapid social changes, economic uncertainty, and fears of cultural and political disruption following World War I. Waves of immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe were met with hostility, as many native-born Americans viewed them as threats to jobs, social stability, and “traditional” American values. This era saw the passage of restrictive immigration laws such as the Emergency Quota Act of 1921 and the Immigration Act of 1924, which established strict limits on immigration, especially targeting those from non-Western European countries. Nativism also manifested in the revival of the Ku Klux Klan, which expanded its targets to include not only African Americans but also Catholics, Jews, and immigrants. Fueled by xenophobia, economic competition, and cultural anxiety, nativists demanded conformity to their vision of what it meant to be “American.” These demands raise critical questions about identity, belonging, and loyalty in a nation defined by immigration. What does it mean to be “American”? How did nativist attitudes in the 1920s shape the definition of American identity? Additionally, draw comparisons to contemporary examples of nativism or debates over immigration in the United States today in 2026. How do questions of identity and belonging continue to shape American society, and what lessons can we learn from the 1920s?

Choose and discuss a film that fits into one of the genres above that you would recommend for others to see. Describe the film, and what is interesting to you about it. Why would you recommend it?

The following are some questions you might want to use to format your response, but the question is above.

Describe the genre. What is its history? What is it about within and also underneath the literal storyline? Genres, by definition, are recurring. The same storyline or theme reappears a bit differently over and over again. Has the genre you have chosen to write about endured? Why or why not? Has it changed over time?

    Then:

What is the film you have chosen, and how is it able to exemplify the genre? Summarize the film’s plot, assuming the reader has not seen it but is familiar with the genre.

Does it exemplify the genre well or fail to meet the expectations of the audience for the genre? Does it go beyond the genre, creating new ways in which films within the genre might be made in the future?

Do you have a history of watching the chosen genre? Is this film a favorite, or not? What is your personal reaction to the film? How does understanding the genre enhance the watching of the film?

(Please note that it is all right to use a film of your choice as long as it fits into one of the genres we’ve discussed.)

    Expected length: minimum 4-5 pages

Sources: At least two citations, minimum. You can use your text for these or you can use other references. List sources at end.

  • Review Paper #1

Instructions for Completing the Ethics and Persuasion Review Paper

This review paper examines key theories of ethical persuasion and applies them to modern communication. The paper should explain the six major ethical perspectives for analyzing ethical issues in persuasion as outlined in the assigned readings and discuss how these perspectives influence the ethical crafting and delivery of persuasive messages. The paper should also address social media platforms by proposing an ethical code that helps prevent the spread of false information while balancing harm prevention with the protection of freedom of speech.

Students should rely on the assigned readings, Perspectives on Ethics in Persuasion by Richard Johannesen and Persuasion and Ethics in the Media Age, to identify and explain the six ethical perspectives and to support their discussion of media ethics. The paper should reflect understanding of these perspectives and apply them thoughtfully rather than summarizing the readings.

The paper should be approximately 500 words and follow standard formatting requirements: 12-point font, double-spaced, 1-inch margins, page numbers in the upper right corner, and a title page including name, course name and number, and section number. The paper is evaluated primarily on content, with attention to organization, grammar, and formatting. Papers that are under three pages may lack sufficient depth. The assignment is due February 19 by 11:59 AM.
