  • Film Adaptation Review

    Overview

Kazuo Ishiguros novels are often described as subtle, restrained, and deeply concerned with memory, identity, repression, and moral responsibility. Several of his works have been adapted for film, most notably The Remains of the Day (1993), Never Let Me Go (2010), and An Artist of the Floating World (2019). In this assignment, you will write a critical essay evaluating how a film adaptation translates the themes, ideas, and tone of one of Ishiguros novels into an audiovisual medium.

You are not expected to have prior training in film studies or to use extensive technical film terminology. Instead, your focus should be on interpretation: how the film conveys (or alters) the novels emotional impact, thematic concerns, and narrative perspective through visual, auditory, and performance-based choices.

    Texts

Choose one of the following pairings:

    • The Remains of the Day and its 1993 film adaptation (dir. James Ivory)
    • Never Let Me Go and its 2010 film adaptation (dir. Mark Romanek)
    • An Artist of the Floating World and its 2019 Japanese television film adaptation (dir. Kazuki Watanabe)
    • Note this film is in Japanese with English subtitles

You should be familiar with both the novel and the film before writing your essay.

    Instructions

In a well-organized, thesis-driven essay of approximately 1,000 words, evaluate the effectiveness of the film adaptation. Your essay should address the following guiding question:

How does the film adaptation translate the themes, ideas, and tone of Ishiguros novel into an audiovisual form, and what is gained or lost in the process?

You do not need to cover every aspect listed below, but your essay should thoughtfully engage with several of them:

    • Themes and Ideas: How does the film represent central themes such as memory, repression, duty, love, mortality, or ethical responsibility? Are any themes emphasized, muted, or transformed in the adaptation?
    • Narrative Perspective: Ishiguros novels often rely on first-person narration, unreliable memory, and interior reflection. How does the film handle the absence of a literary narrator? Does it use voiceover, visual cues, performance, or silence to convey interiority?
    • Tone and Mood: How would you describe the tone of the novel (e.g., restrained, melancholic, unsettling, quietly tragic)? How does the film create a similar or different tone through pacing, music, color, setting, or acting?
    • Characterization: Do the films performances align with your interpretation of the characters in the novel? How do actors expressions, gestures, and interactions convey emotional restraint or suppressed feeling?
    • Adaptation Choices: Are there significant changes to the plot, structure, or ending? How do these changes affect the novels meaning or emotional impact?

    Expectations

    Your essay should:

    • Present a clear and arguable thesis about the film adaptation
    • Use specific examples from both the novel and the film
    • Demonstrate careful reading and viewing
    • Be organized into coherent paragraphs with logical transitions
    • Be written in clear, formal academic prose

You may refer to specific scenes, moments, or lines of dialogue, but you are not required to use outside sources. If you do use secondary criticism, cite it properly.

    Evaluation Criteria

Your essay will be evaluated based on:

    • Strength and clarity of thesis (15 points)
    • Depth of analysis and engagement with themes and tone (25 points)
    • Effective use of textual and cinematic examples (25 points)
    • Organization and coherence (25 points)
    • Clarity and correctness of writing (10 points)

    Submission Guidelines

    • Approximately 1,000 words
    • Double-spaced, standard font and margins
    • Include your name, instructor name, course, and date at the top of the first page
    • MLA Citations failure to include in-text citations or a Works Cited page will incur a 10 point penalty
    • Submit via Online Delhi by 10 p.m. on Saturday, February 14

Tip: Rather than judging whether the film is faithful in a surface-level way, focus on how well it captures (or reimagines) what feels most essential about Ishiguros work.

  • NIs

Read each story and comment separately. do not compare both stories. Story 1 One issue that has ethical, legal, and accreditation implications for my practice as an Informatics Nurse Specialist (INS) is telehealth neurological assessments for suspected stroke patients in the emergency department (ED), especially when workflow gaps occur. In a busy ED, neuro carts are sometimes misplaced, not charged, or stored in another pod, which delays connection with the remote neurologist and slows NIH Stroke Scale completion. Those minutes matter when determining eligibility for thrombolytic therapy such as tenecteplase, and delays directly affect door to implementation times of stroke certification standards from The Joint Commission and clinical guidance from the American Heart Association. Compounding this, my hospital still relies on paper documentation for TNK administration. Paper forms increase the risk of incomplete time capture, missing contraindication checks, scanning delays, and documentation that is not immediately visible to the interdisciplinary team. From an informatics perspective, this creates legal exposure and quality reporting challenges because time stamps, dosing verification, and eligibility criteria are not structured or easily retrievable for audit. In practice, I would standardize cart placement, explore real time location tracking, embed structured NIHSS and TNK eligibility tools directly into the EHR, and transition from paper to electronic stroke documentation with mandatory fields and automated time stamps. I would also partner with ED leadership to review door to intervention metrics and reinforce rapid stroke alert activation processes. Aligning technology, workflow, and documentation strengthens patient safety, supports accreditation compliance, and reduces organizational risk. Story 2 Since the end of 2020, many rural hospitals have either stopped delivering babies or announced they will do so before the end of 2026. This represents a 10% reduction in rural labor and delivery units. The accreditation issue in rural areas is a significant concern given the high costs of labor and delivery services. Rural hospitals often face financial challenges, including high fixed labor and delivery unit costs, which can lead to the closure of these services. To build a collective response, it is crucial to prioritize workforce training and education. Preparing physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, dentists, and other healthcare professionals to work in rural settings can strengthen maternal health services. Strategies such as Grow Your Own and Career Ladder Programs, along with investments in rural healthcare education, can support recruitment and retention efforts. Interprofessional education and telehealth training are vital tools for addressing staffing challenges faced by providers and hospitals operating in isolation, thereby encouraging collaborative solutions

Below are the facts that Luke provides to you. ***** Luke has been asked to work on a project that involves developing land recently purchased by ABC to build an adult entertainment retail store. According to the plan, the land is located on the corner of the neighborhood where Owen, Lukes brother, lives. Luke knows that as soon as the plans for the store are made public, property values for the surrounding neighborhood will decrease significantly. ABC plans to publicly announce the project one month from today. Luke is concerned about his obligations of confidentiality to his company. However, Luke is also very close to Owen, who recently told Luke that he received an offer to sell his house at an okay price given the current real estate market. Owen is considering selling but hasnt made any final decision yet. He wonders if he might get a better offer a few years from now when the real estate market improves. What is the ethical issue, why is this an issue, and what should Luke do about it? ***** For assignment 1, prepare a memo, setting out your analysis and recommendations, that considers ONLY: Utilitarianism and Universal Ethics (i.e., Kants categorical imperative). Choose the best theory on which you base your recommendation.
