  • Assignment

Module 1, Section 1 Review Assignment

Note: Any quotes are from the book of readings.

You need to read and review two articles from the book of readings, Critical Issues in Policing.

    • The Foundation of the Police Role in Society: Important Information to Know during a Police Legitimacy Crisis, Dunham & Alpert, pages 3 – 11
    • The Development of the American Police: An Historical Overview, Craig Uchida, pages 11 – 30

Dunham and Alpert set “the social context of policing by discussing how the institution of policing fits into a very complex U.S. society.” They move to a discussion of the use of force. The use of force makes police unique. It allows police to “function effectively.”

The social contract of American society provides for the people to allow police to possess and exert force. The parameters of the use of force remain ultimately with the people. According to Alpert and Dunham, police, despite continuing controversies, generally rate high among the people. However, this is difficult in an ever-increasing and complex role of the police function.

The United States system of policing and law enforcement is complex and extensive. It appears to be a fragmented system. The federal government alone has many overlapping law enforcement agencies. They note a difference between policing and law enforcement. The authors try to provide an understanding of the place and role of the police in society. Their article provides a good introduction.

The second article provides a somewhat comprehensive historical overview of policing since 900 AD. I found this reading fascinating. The article, while providing a foundation in the historical development of policing give the reader a good understanding of the evolution of policing.

Uchida starts by telling the reader how policing developed as a community activity from 900 AD. Citizens had direct responsibility for policing and other activities in their British communities. With the rise of larger population centers, a need for an established police force developed. A preventive approach to crime developed. In America, policing became more of a political exercise than it was in Britain.

The reading discusses three of the major reform eras, including the major upheaval in society and policing during the 1960s and 70s. Police and citizen conflicts occurred frequently. Most major cities had riots.

You should find the historical development of policing fascinating. You might be surprise many of the arguments occurring today are repeats of the past.

George Kelling, in his 2003 article, starts from the perspective that the “United States is in a period of dramatic change. This assertion appears as true today as it was in 2003. The questions he asks about factors responsible for drops in certain crime rates are still relevant.

Much of Kelling’s article reflects on the history and development of policing in the United States. Consider carefully what came before to better understand the present and possible future. You should find this article interesting and informative.

The authors discuss the development of community policing, which occurred after the 60s and 70s. However, community policing means different things to different people. The author points out that the federal government often throws cash at the problem.

You should find both articles interesting and informative.

For this assignment, you must reflect on both articles and tell me what you learned, what you found interesting, and what, if anything, you take away from the articles that you can use or think about using in the future. You have a lot of latitude in completing this assignment. However, I want to read a serious reflection.

Submit the assignment as a Word/Office document that is equivalent to two to three pages. However, there is no page limit. Outside sources may help to enhance your grade.

Double-space between paragraphs. Single-space between lines within paragraphs. A good assignment starts with an introduction and ends with a summary or conclusion.

Grading will consider content along with grammar, essay format, spelling, use of terminology, paragraph structure, and sentence structure. Submit the Review as a Word/Office document.

Put in the upper left corner your name, course name, Spring 2025, Part I Assignment.

  • Problems in education in the United States

If we look at the landscape of education in the United States, it appears the mandates and policies implemented over the last 50 years may not have been as effective as initially hoped. The United States still lags behind many other countries when it comes to quality education. But why is that the case? In Against School, John Gatto argues that American schools stunt student learning and teacher engagement through compulsory practices that produce mediocre thinking. Mike Rose provides support for Gatto’s claim in I Just Wanna Be Average as he recalls the low expectations for certain high school students versus high expectations for others. We might even say that Sara Goldrick-Rab, in City of Broken Dreams, shows how such prescriptive schooling eventually impacts student performance in college. These selections from Chapter Two offer compelling analyses and arguments of what is problematic about education in the United States. Your goal is to do the same. Write an argumentative essay in which you reflect on what you believe is a significant problem in education that needs to be addressed. You will need first to identify the problem and then discuss why you think what you have chosen is a problem and why and how it needs to be addressed. As you develop your ideas, remember to analyze the situation to show that it is a real problem; just saying it is a problem is not enough. You should discuss the cause of the problem, identify those whom it impacts, and explain the impact, and discuss potential solutions. As you brainstorm to identify a problem you want to write about, you might think about the following areas: A particular curriculumfor example, required courses in elementary school, high school, or college, or the particular skills taught in one of those courses Learning environmentfor example, physical classrooms, access to technology within classrooms, or online learning experiences Disciplinary practicesacademic practices within a particular major or field of study DO NOT CHOOSE all of these. One of the biggest mistakes students make on this essay is listing four different problems in their thesis. Do not do that. Pick one issue and state your argument. You do not need to list all of your main points either in the thesis. You should provide relevant and sufficient information and data to support your assessment. Be sure to fully consider the scope of the problem by analyzing it thoroughly and evaluating it carefully. You are not responsible for providing a solution, just showing that something is a problem. If there is opposition to your points, you must include them and offer rebuttals. Your paper should include all of the following: You should have an introduction that moves from general information to more specific information ending with the most specific information: a clear argumentative thesis that makes a case for the problems you are going to show in your paper. The body should be comprised of several 8/11-point paragraphs. You should have four body paragraphs NOT three. End the paper with a conclusion that gives your final thought and does not just merely restate your thesis and main points. Your essay should be at least 1250 words. Follow MLA guidelines. Incorporate three (no more and no less) credible sources. (see the Finding a Topic and Sources for the Argument and Persuasive/Proposal essays (Essays 2&4) in the Writing Tips and Essentials module) Have a properly formatted Works Cited page. Use The Little Seagull Handbook’s MLA section to help you. Use the paper pre-submission checklist BEFORE submitting the essay. ENG 101 Updated Paper Pre-Submission Checklist.docx

  • Souad / one more philosophy

*** answer this for two students

    What is Philosophy?

This week, I want you to think about what you expect to get out of this class. After doing the readings, imagine that a friend or family member has asked you why you are taking a philosophy class. They may be wondering what philosophy is, what it is good for, or why you would want to learn about it. In this discussion board, answer them by explaining what you’ve read from our first two readings.

Since you need to post two responses each week, make one of your posts play the devil’s advocate. Now YOU can be the inquisitive friend or family member who isn’t yet convinced that philosophy is worthwhile. Challenge one of your classmates to answer/defend the importance of philosophy.

Finally, what do you really think? Is philosophy worthwhile? Why or why not? (I promise I won’t mark you down for being honest! 😉
