Everything we have done so far this semester (in particular, the FIRE Assignment!) has ultimately been in preparation for this, The Researched Essay. For this assignment you are asked to read about and research a topic extensively, choosing particular resources that will help you to produce a convincing argument that uses solid synthesis for support. Just as in Assignment #1: The Multiple Source Essay, you must construct an original argument, being careful not to let your essay be taken over by outside sources. Do not just dump a bunch of source material on your reader, but rather make sure you build an original argument in your own words that is merely supported by outside material. Keep in mind, a grade of C or higher (a passing grade!) is required on this final essay!
The Assignment:
- Using sources, build an extensive argument of your own. Your essay can be on any topic (use your topic from Essay #2!) that you wish, just make sure that the subject matter you are dealing with is something controversial and debatable, and you take a point of view that must be supported by evidence and reasoning in order to be effective.
- This essay requires you to use at least 8 sources. You should use credible, academic sources such as books, scholarly journals (visit EBSCO!), magazines, reputable newspapers, and academically-oriented websites. Avoid sources such as Wikipedia, Ask.com, and other non-peer-reviewed sources.
- Your essay can hold to an arguing a position format. Other possibilities include proposing solutions and speculating about causes (see handout in Canvas!) In short, you are to name an issue, discuss briefly why the issue is controversial, and finally argue a clear position using a series of well-supported main points. Avoid critiquing your sources!
The Essay: Your Researched Essay should be between 8 and 10 pages long. Essays less than 8 pages in length WILL NOT PASS and youll be required to revise. Please include the following basic elements in your paper:
- A clear and arguable thesis: Make sure your thesis is arguable, clearly stated, and shows a definite opinion. Also, because of the longer nature of this essay, you are required to preview the main points of your essay in (or near) the thesis statement itself.
- A well-organized argument with several main points: Your thesis should be supported by at least 4 to 6 clearly stated points. However (and this is important), keep in mind that it is not acceptable to merely adapt one supporting point from each source and proceed through the essay in a source-by-source manner. The key here is to look for connections and relationships between the sources so that each point can be supported by more than one source (synthesis!) Ideally, a passing research essay would include at least three instances of source synthesis.
- Balanced development of your key points: You MUST develop your points with adequate support and examples. However, along with source material, your points should also be supported by your own ideas and arguments. It is okay to compare and contrast ideas and evidence, link assumptions together, and use like points to organize your essay. However, you should make sure that there is a reasonable balance between outside ideas from sources and your own throughout the essay.
- Clear and correct citation of sources: You should make sure all your sources are used in context with the authors original point and not skewed or misrepresented in your essay. You must also use proper MLA documentation format throughout all drafts of your essay, including in-text citations and a complete Works Cited page. Your essays grade will be seriously affected by improper MLA citation.
- Attention to counterarguments: As always, at some point in your essay, you must make it clear that you can understand and respond to arguments contrary to the opinion put forth in your essay. I strongly encourage you to use sources both to illustrate the oppositions view and/or aid in refuting it.
- here is a outline of my prompt and what you should be writing about. In my introduction, I am going to present my topic which is the importance and benifits of dynamic stretching.
