Group members influence each other’s behavior through the development and enforcement of norms – that is, essentially through peer pressure. In general this process is positive, as it helps get the job done. Sometimes it results in Group think. It can also result in team members complying with illegal or unethical norms, as it did at Enron.

Discussion Prompts:

  • Select and type of group (work, school, sports) you belong or have belonged to. Explaining how each of the groups five structure components affect or did affect its performance.
  • What were some of the norms for this group?
  • Should employees be able to “do their own thing” without group enforcement of norms?
  • Is it ethical or socially responsible for groups to develop and enforce norms? Explain.
  • If yes, what type of ethical standards should a group have?
  • What role should a manager play in the establishment of roles and norms?
