  • Food: Compare and Contrast

Discussion #2 – Food: Compare and Contrast

Compare and contrast two artworks from Chapter 5, Food and Shelter. Explain to me (using sources outside of only the class text) the history of both artworks. What do scholars say (always put this information into your own words, then cite at the bottom of the paper) is depicted in them? How does the depiction and the meaning of food differ between the two?

Now, what do you believe the artist is trying to say about our relationship to food? Is it necessary? Ritualistic? Symbolic? Finally, using your outside research of the breadth of the artist’s work over their career up to the point/year of the artwork you chose (you can use Artnet online to see large amounts of certain artist’s work all in one place, or access museum websites) document if the highlighting of food in this artist’s work is typical, or if it is a departure from their usual subject matter.

Be sure add interesting historical details and observations.

    Requirements:

    • Minimum 5 paragraphs (6-7 sentences per paragraph), Times New Roman, black, double-spaced. You cannot submit a .txt file, because you will not be able to submit in Times New Roman, etc.. I cannot accept papers that are not formatted in this way.
    • Your work must contain at least 3 sources of outside information mentioned above: your textbook, printed books, videos, museum websites (or scholarly journals, as found on JSTOR).
    • I cannot download attachments, so be sure that your work is ready to grade inside of the TurnItIn Canvas box.
