Discussion #2 – Food: Compare and Contrast
Compare and contrast two artworks from Chapter 5, Food and Shelter. Explain to me (using sources outside of only the class text) the history of both artworks. What do scholars say (always put this information into your own words, then cite at the bottom of the paper) is depicted in them? How does the depiction and the meaning of food differ between the two?
Now, what do you believe the artist is trying to say about our relationship to food? Is it necessary? Ritualistic? Symbolic? Finally, using your outside research of the breadth of the artist’s work over their career up to the point/year of the artwork you chose (you can use Artnet online to see large amounts of certain artist’s work all in one place, or access museum websites) document if the highlighting of food in this artist’s work is typical, or if it is a departure from their usual subject matter.
Be sure add interesting historical details and observations.

For this writing assignment, you will write a 1-2 paged (5+ paragraph) research / response essay about the artist Yinka Shonibare and how he uses color. I want you to focus on your essay format with an introduction, word body, and conclusion that support your ideas about the Shonibare’s work (that is at least 5 paragraphs, single or double-spaced, 12 point font). I want you to give me a brief description of the artist’s personal biography, how he utilizes symbolic color, and some of the underlying meanings explored.
Try answering questions like: What is the subject in Victorian Couple (1999, see textbook)? How has his disability influenced his artwork? What is the artistic method/artistic process? How is symbolic color used? Is the work serious or humorous and how can you tell? What role do history and politics play in his work?
In the Chapter 4 Highlight Writing Assignment: El Anatsui, you will explore the artist’s use of texture and pattern as well as his process, materials, methods, and influences. In this 1-2 paged written document be sure to write in an essay format, meaning at least 5 paragraphs with an clear introduction, word body, and conclusion. (1-2 written pages, 12 point font, double or single spaced)
Explore the Course Content with included videos on the eLearn site. In this essay, answer questions like: What are El Anatsui’s influences? How does his background and his culture shape his artwork? Discuss El Anatsui’s artistic process/production and his materials and methods. How does he and his team manipulate and transform raw materials into something that is fine art? What does Anatsui mean when he describes his work as having an “indeterminate form?” Describe how Anatsui links two/three histories together through his work.

I drew a picture and used acrylic paints and a black sharpie marker. The assignment was to listen to your favorite song several times with your eyes closed. Really try to capture the feeling of the music visually. Is it soft, heavy, frantic, warm, cold, happy, sad, angry, etc…? What marks feel like that? What colors make you feel like that? I NEED a short 100 word formal analysis of how the painting communicates the song
The song I chose was “Choosing Texas” by Ella Langley
I will include a pic of my drawing for reference!
