For this exercise, you will be learning research skills by acting as a Researcher within a moving image archive, browsing through archival video clips in Uluulu’s collections and corresponding with a Moving Image Archivist in order to watch full-length footage. This exercise includes an exploration of the Traditional Arts and Skills Theme which includes a variety of programs from Uluulu’s collections that highlight the kumu and master artisans of traditional skills and arts in Hawaii. * Important Note: It usually takes Uluulu about 24 hours during our open hours of Monday-Friday to provide links to full-length footage. Please start a few days early to allow yourself enough time to complete this assignment. WRITE A 2-PAGE PAPER (500 words) describing your reference and research interaction at Uluulu and following the steps below. 1. Navigate to the Traditional Arts and Skills Theme and watch several clips. Choose one video clip from this theme that appealed to you. Share the Title and URL. For example: Title: Will Kyselka, Astronomer URL: https://uluulu.recollectcms.com/nodes/view/6158 Describe the clip and what most interests you about it. 2. Contact the Archive and Request the Full Length Program. Click on the envelope icon and use the “Contact Us About This” link to the left of your selected video clip to request access to the full-length file. Describe this process by answering the following questions. What information did you send through the submission form? How long did it take for you to receive a response and a link to the full-length file? Did you rely on email correspondence or telephone reference? Who was the helpful archivist that you corresponded with? 3. Watch the Full Length File. Describe how the footage met or did not meet your research expectations by answering the following questions. Is the short clip online a good representation of the entire footage? Did the full-length footage provide more information about the subject? Was the full-length footage surprising in any way? How might this video be useful for researchers or filmmakers? 4. Save your exercise as a PDF with the filename lastname_cm402_exercise#.pdf. For example, my Exercise #1 would be named quirante_cm402_exercise1.pdf

Session 5 Final Paper
Research two popular artists of any century who have contrasting styles (see ). Your paper should thoughtfully discuss:
- What is their world view as communicated in their artwork?
- By contemplating their expressions of art and their history as artists, how do you believe they may be similar?
- What do you personally like about their art?
- How does their culture or society influence their style?
- Why are these two artists so appreciated by the larger community?
Your paper must also include:
- How your current understanding of the art world may or may not have an influence on your personal world view.
- A minimum of 4 references cited and referenced according to APA guidelines.
The research paper must be 4-5 typed pages (not including the cover and reference page). You are not required to include pictures depicting the artists work, however if you do choose to include them, they may not take up more than the equivalent of one page. Your paper will be evaluated on accurate, college-level writing skills. Expressions should be concise and meaningful, and resources well documented. Correct syntax is expected, along with adherence to APA format.
If using the same artists in your session 5 paper as your session 5 slideshow, avoid duplicating your writing across both (self-plagiarism). Perhaps you have two artists identified for your slideshow, but struggle to find enough info to write a full-length paper on them. In this case, consider two additional artists (for which more research material is available) for your paper.
