Argument: Adolescence uses psychoanalytic structures repression, desire, and fractured identity to construct a portrait of a boy whose psychic collapse is engineered not by individual pathology but by the ideological conditions of online radicalization and familial disconnection, revealing how popular culture can make visible the unconscious forces that produce real-world violence.

  • Create Your Own Case Study and Literature Review

    Purpose

The goal of this assignment is to bring together what you have learned in this course this semester to craft your own case study around an important issue in the field of sports communication. This should demonstrate your mastery of the field of sports communication and your depth of understanding of the particular issue and case study you select. Use the case studies that you have engaged with this semester as a model for this assignment.

    Task

The paper should be 4 to 6 pages and be divided into two sections: (1) the case study and discussion questions, and, (2) the literature review. In addition to the 4-6 pages, include a cover page and an APA reference page that lists the sources used in the case study and literature review.

    Case Study

    • Write 2 to 3 pages applying situational crisis theory (created by W. Timothy Coombs in 2007) to create a case study based on a non-fictional sports scandal (similar to the case studies you have read this semester). Additionally, create 2 to 3 relevant discussion questions to accompany the case study and you are not required to answer the discussion questions.
    • Your case study may involve any of the key sports-related issues we have covered this semester including but not limited to: issues involving sports and the intersection of race, gender, social class, fandom, coach-athlete communication, team communication, etc. This should be a well-researched, original creative project that provides an example of an issue that we may encounter in sport communication research.
    • You are not allowed to use the topics/case studies that have been discussed in the course case study discussion assignments.

    Literature Review

    • Develop a 2 to 3 page literature review that includes:
      • an overview of the crisis you selected
      • an overview of situational crisis theory (Coombs, 2007)
      • an overview of how situational crisis theory (Coombs, 2007) may inform, or be applied to, your scandal. This is an opportunity to integrate course concepts beyond situational crisis theory that we have covered this semester.

Listed below are questions to guide your paper and areas you may cover in your case study and/or literature review.

    1. What was the crisis that the organization/individual(s) faced?
    2. Who does the initial crisis responsibility fall on?
    3. How has the organization/individual(s) faced crises in the past?
    4. What was the organization’s/individual(s)’s reputation prior to this crisis?
    5. Which management strategies did the organization/individual(s) use (e.g., denial, diminishment, rebuilding, bolstering), and how?
    6. What were the effects of the organization’s/individual(s)’s management strategies on the organization/individual(s)?
    7. How has the organization/individual(s) “moved on” from this crisis? In other words, what is the current standing of the organization/individual(s)?

    Formatting & APA Citations

    • The paper should be formatted using APA 7th edition formatting guidelines which includes a cover page, page numbers, and a reference page. You do not need an abstract.
    • Practice a collegiate writing style by using proper syntax, spelling, grammar, etc. Take time to revise your paper before submitting the final version.
