Reflective Portfolio
An important part of the learning process is to reflect on what you have learnt, and consider how you might apply what you have learnt in the future. To help you achieve this, you will complete a written reflection after each unit of work has been completed. You should answer the questions below, giving examples and providing evidence from your course where possible.
Response Guidelines
Answer each question using bullet points
Use specific examples and details to show rather than tell your points
Connect your reflection to future IT contexts
Demonstrate awareness of audience, purpose, and design
Task 1: Workplace Communication in IT
Who was your audience for the email? Who was your audience for the memo? How did you change your writing style to cater for the different audience?
For this assignment, how did the idea of purpose affect your writing?
Did you use bullet points, numbered lists, or tables? If so, how?
What did you learn from doing this assignment, and how might you use this in the future.
Task 2: Report Writing in IT
What did you learn about working in a group? In your opinion, did the quality of your work improve because you were working in a group? Why/not?
How well did your group work together? Were there any difficulties? What were the benefits of working in a group?
What was the most difficult thing about the assignment?
Task 3: Presentation Reflection
How did you select and adapt content from your Recommendation Report to create your presentation? What were two key changes you made to adapt your ideas for the live presentation? Why?
How is giving a presentation different from writing a report? How did this impact your presentation choices? Think about slide design, language, body language, signposting, etc.
Thinking about your own presentation, what is one thing you did well and one thing you would like to improve the next time you give a presentation?
Task 4: Instruction Manual
How did you adapt your writing of the manual to cater to the audience?
For this assignment, how did the idea of purpose affect your writing?
After your first draft, how did you revise your instruction manual? Did feedback from your instructor help? Why/not?
Which design principles did you use when designing your instruction manual?
How did you use images in your instruction manual, and what impact did they have?
Task 5: Overall Course Reflection
The beginning of the course differentiated between technical and academic writing. Now that you have completed the course, reflect on how you think technical writing is different from academic writing. How have you developed as a technical writer throughout this course? What technical writing skills do you think you will use in the future?
