  • Concert Report

Concert Report Assignment Sheet & Checklist ( concert: W.A. Mozart Requiem – Orchestre national de France: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dp2SJN4UiE4 )

To further enhance your experience of music, you will write one report/review of a classical

concert. The concert must be of classical music. If you attend a live in-person concert it

must occur during this semester. I will provide a list of acceptable online concerts you may

use in place of attending a live concert. That list can be found under Content on MY

    COURSES (D2L).

For online concerts, ONLY those concerts on the list are

    acceptable.

This does NOT open the reports to everything on YouTube or other online

sites, nor does it allow for live online performances. If you do not want to physically attend

a live concert venue, you must use the list provided.

__ The concert level should be college or adult. No Elementary, Jr. High, or High School

    Concerts.

    __

Include a scan or photo of the ticket or printed program for live concerts only

    . If

you attend a concert where there is no ticket or program, you can document attendance

with a photo. (No proof of attendance is needed for online concerts from the list.) Please

contact your instructor if you are unsure if a particular live concert is okay for this

assignment. For live concerts only (Not online concerts): include the date, time, and

location of the concert) in the body of your paper.

__ The concert report should include a

    very brief

discussion of the venue, the performers

or ensemble and their instruments, then an overview of the entire concert. If it is a long

performance, you can choose to focus on one or two pieces, but there MUST be a fairly

detailed overview of the entire concert, including the titles and something specific about

    each piece and movement performed.

The emphasis of the paper should focus on the

MUSIC and your description of what YOU heard and saw at the performance. Be

specific about what YOU heard. This is not a paper about your emotional response to

the music or some imagined storyline, nor is it a research paper about the history of

the music or the composer. Listening to the concert is the ONLY research you

    should do for this paper.

__ The reports should be typed and include 2 FULL pages of double-spaced, left aligned

writing. Portrait orientation only. Use 1 margins and no font larger than 12-point. Indent

each paragraph and do not add any blank lines or subtitles between paragraphs. Page 2 of

the report must fill at least 3/4 of the page. Short papers will be docked 50 points, with one-

page papers receiving no credit. Do not include lists or bullet points. The paper should be

    written in paragraphs only.

    __

Your concert report must be in Microsoft WORD (.docx) format.

    No other formats

will be accepted. If you use Works, Google Docs, Apple Pages, PDF, or various other file

formats, please convert your document to the WORD file format before submitting it. You

can get assistance from the PPCC Computer Lab if you are unsure how to do this.

__ The heading should be just your name in the upper corner of the page and a centered

title. Headings that take up more space than this will be graded (and possibly docked)

based on the length of the paper without the expanded heading. An MLA format heading

should NOT be used for the concert reports.

__ Submit your concert report in the appropriate MY COURSES (D2L) drop box under the

    Assignments heading.

I do NOT accept late concert reports.

    Concert reports can

always be turned in any time before the due date.

Initially, this assignment was designed for the movie “The Jazz Singer,” which was the first movie with both synchronized recorded music score and lip-synchronous singing and speech. However, due to a racist scene (actor Al Johnson appears in Blackface), I have decided to take the movie out of our assignment. For educational purposes only, I am still keeping the information about the film below. Please, if you decide to watch the movie, be advised.

  • Dmitri Shostakovich

Shostakovich is a special composer. Dmitri Shostakovich is important because he became one of the most influential composers of the 20th century, blending bold musical innovation with a powerful reflection of life under Soviet rule. His symphonies, quartets, and concertos are performed worldwide, admired for their emotional depth, structural brilliance, and ability to convey both public struggle and private resistance. His work not only shaped modern classical music but also stands as a cultural document of artistic courage in a repressive political era.

Dmitri Shostakovichs relationship with Joseph Stalin was defined by fear, coercion, and a constant struggle for artistic survival. After early acclaim, Shostakovich fell sharply out of favor in 1936 when Stalin condemned his opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, triggering years of terror and selfcensorship as the composer navigated the regimes unpredictable demands. Stalins dictatorship kept Shostakovich in a tense catandmouse game, alternately threatening him and elevating him when it served the states purposesCarnegie Hall. Yet even under this oppressive shadow, Shostakovich continued to compose works that subtly reflected his inner resistance, making their connection one of the most complex and psychologically charged artistdictator relationships of the 20th century.

This paper will deal with both of these giant figures of the last century.

Here is what I want you to do: Listen to Shostakovich’s 5th and 7th symphonies (if you want to do more, add his 8th and 10th). Listen to several versions of each. I will send out some versions that I like; they are all on Youtube.

Do research on DS’s life and the works. Do research on the Russian Revolution and the rise of Joseph Stalin. Look closely on how the Soviet dictator and Shostakovich the composer overlapped. As you listen to the two symphonies, see if your feelings change as you digest the music and learn about Shostakovich and his works. Ask around. See if anyone you know has ever heard of him.

Here is a possible outline for the paper:

Introduction–Hook–get interest of the reader, do not name DS in the first 1-3 sentences; name DS and Stalin and give some general info on DS and his work, as well as rise of Stalin as dictator; give some specific info on the two works; end the intro with the thesis/main idea of the paper–a clear statement about DS’s importance and the importance of these works in an atmosphere of Stalin dictatorship.

Body Paragraph #1–Give some biography of DS—just the important info. Be sure and begin with a topic sentence–the point of the paragraph that links to the main idea….you can do this by including a ‘judgment’ word and the concept of music in here. Then discuss the first half of his life.

#2–Continue the bio, but focus more on his composing…etc.

#3–Write about the early career, giving an overview of his composing style, how it was different or simile to other works/composers of the period. Nice time to quote from a critic or historian.

#4–Discuss the Russian Revolution (the rise and death of Lenin and the ascendance of Stalin).

#5–Discuss the purges instigated by Stalin, especially how they relate to the artistic world.

#6–Discuss the fifth symphony, how it fits into DS’s life and how it has been analyzed over the years.

#7–Discuss the siege of Leningrad and how it relates to DS’s life and the composition of the 7th symphony. Also (maybe in another paragraph) deal with the first performances of the work and how it relates to the war effort.

#8–Discuss the death of Stalin and the later years of DS.

#9–Tell about your experience doing this assignment/listening/researching: the specific orchestras performing the music, the documentaries you viewed, and the evolution of your thought process as you worked on the paper. Discuss when you listened, who you discussed the music with, whether your views changed….etc. (you can chose to mention i am a violinist myself and play for nine years, optional)

  • IPA Mini dissertation titled “Exploring the lived experience…

I am doing a masters IPA mini disseration titled “Exploring the lived experiences of visually impaired retirees in a group music therapy setting” in APA format. I have completed chapters 1-4 and need assistance with chapter 5, the discussion chapter. This chapter should be guided by my research questions, integrating the research questions with the findings and the literature review. I have uploaded a document with my chapters 1-4 as well as a table with the complete group experiential themes. Would you be able to write a draft of my chapter 5, using the information provided? I would greatly appreciate it. Moreover, I have uploaded 4 documents. One has chapter 1-4. The other document has the group experienial themes, and the other two documents are resources that I thought would be nice to include along with the literature from the literature review as some new things popped up that was not in the literature review.
