In children with pain (P), how does pharmacological pain management (I) compare to holistic pain management (C) affect the reduction of pain perception (O) within a routine hospital stay (T)?

Pain is defined as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential damage by the international association for the study of pain. He et al., (2015). Equipping clients and parents with knowledge and skills to manage their children’s acute and chronic pain is essential. The holistic pain management approaches are at least as effective as pharmacological pain management methods on child pain perception. The evidence in these studies concluded that holistic methods were as beneficial as pharmacological methods without the risk of adverse effects. Pediatric pain management has progressed from being overlooked to becoming a core element of child healthcare. Research shows that unrelieved pain negatively affects healing, growth, and neurological development. Proper treatment depends on thorough assessment, preventive measures, a multimodal approach, and involvement of the family. Using supportive non-drug techniques alongside appropriate medications helps reduce distress and enhances clinical outcomes. In essence, relieving pain in children is not merely supportive care but an essential medical intervention that protects both short-term recovery and long-term wellbeing.

Mishels uncertainty in Illness theory align with practical theory, explains how uncertainty occurs when a person cannot assign meaning to illness-related events Reinken (2023). This uncertainty affects emotional responses, coping, and adaptation. pain management among all demographics in healthcare. Especially, in pediatric care, children may not always verbalize pain precisely assessment must combine self-report, behavioral cues, and physiological signs. For example, tool to assess pain in pediatric care FLACC scale and Wong-Baker FACES pain rating scale. Mishels uncertainty in Illness theory teaches nurses approaches to pain management including holistic approaches such as guided imagery and meditation along with pharmaceuticals had the most effect in pain control and perception.

To evaluate effectiveness the goal for equipping clients and parents with knowledge and skills to manage their children’s acute and chronic pain is essential. This review is to examine the effects of educational interventions on parents and children’s knowledge, attitudes and use of pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain relief methods. Along with uncovering the use for effective management of pain control for children who are experiencing acute or chronic pain. This method is effective due to patient and parent can observe effectiveness of pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods.Knowing that opioid medication has unwanted physiological side effects, the authors wanted to explore alternative methods of pain reduction and management in vulnerable pediatric populations. During their research, the authors were able to disseminate modalities other than medication were useful in pain management. The authors also found when these alternative holistic methodologies were used in combination with medication, pain perception was most effectively reduced.
