Basic Research EBP Proposal
Instructions for the Basic Research or EBP Proposal
To fully appreciate and gain a deeper understanding of the research and EBP process, students will write a six-to-seven-page basic research or evidence-based practice project proposal. The paper will be completed in drafts and submitted along with drafts of the Evidence Analysis Grid (EAG). Peer review and the EAG will be used to assist in writing the proposal. The review of the literature will be the first draft. The proposal will be typed in APA format including the following components. The Methods section may be bulleted.
Initial steps:
- The first step is to identify a problem and create a PICOT question and use the terms in the PICOT as your search terms for your data base searches. Keep track of your search terms, the number of hits received, the number of articles reviewed, the number included and why, and the number rejected and why. (I have provided the Johns Hopkins instrument in the folder on Bb for this assignment to help you track this information).
- Include the essential information from each article included in your EAG.
- Assess the quality and quantity of your evidence. What does the literature say about the problem? Is there is a good amount of quality evidence that is consistent in the outcomes? If Yes you have an EBP project and you will be completing an EBP project proposal. If the answer is No, or if there is inconsistency in the literature, this means there is a gap in the literature, and you will be completing a research proposal. If you have a research proposal, then you must determine if a qualitative or quantitative design is the best way to approach the problem. (A synthesis grid is not required for this assignment but it does help with this assessment. If you would like to explore how to convert your EAG to a synthesis grid, please ask for assistance.)
- Items A through C above are all completed by reading and analyzing the literature, and writing the literature review, so getting into the literature is essential and the first step.
Getting into the weeds:
- Literature Review The first draft due with the draft EAG
- The second draft (which should include a substantial amount done on Literature Review) with EAG
- The next draft along with additional work done on the EAG is due for peer review in the Writing Workshop scheduled for. In this workshop the Literature Review and EAG should be very well developed. Based upon this information the student should begin to plan either a research proposal or an EBP project. If not done prior, this workshop should focus on the Purpose, Significance, definition of terms, & possibly the theoretical framework (if research) or EBP model (if an EBP project) and the proposed design. Edits from peer feedback from 3/26/26 will be incorporated and –
Components of the Proposal:
Title of the Proposal –
The title should be clear and succinct.
Abstract –10%
Abstract your proposal after you have finished writing the proposal. This is the last piece of the puzzle and it gets a page all its own. The abstract should include the Background, Purpose, Intervention, Data to be collected, and any potential limitations.
Introduction/Background In about one paragraph, provide some background information about this clinical problem.
Purpose/Research Question(s)/Hypothesis: State the Purpose of the Proposal in clear and concise terms. Only include a hypothesis if it is necessary and do not include one if you are proposing a qualitative design or if this will be an EBP proposal.
Significance State why this proposed study/project is needed. This is the so what factor. If you cannot clearly and logically state the importance and value of the study/project, then why consider it?
Definition of Terms – Define the major terms/concepts in your study/project theoretically and operationally. A theoretical definition is the definition of the term or concept according to your intended use in the proposal. The operational definition is how the term or concept will be measured. Example:
- Depression (you could use the DSM definition with citation) or your own definition as to how you intend to use the term. This would be your theoretical definition.
- Depression will be determined as a score of 9 or above on the PHQ-9 (citation) for the purposes of this project. This would be your operational definition because this is how you are operationalizing (measuring) the concept of depression.
The Background through to the Definition of Terms should encompass one or two pages of the paper. This section of the paper is worth 15%.
Theoretical Framework-Explain the theoretical framework or EBP model for this project.
Please note, theoretical frameworks/models are not usually included in qualitative research studies because qualitative research usually generates theory. However, for the purposes of this paper, everyone will include a theoretical framework or EBP model. Explain this in one paragraph. 10%
Literature Review
Introduction Use this section to introduce the reader to the review of the literature. Include the search terms you used to conduct your search, the number of hits you received, the number of articles reviewed, the number included in the review, and explain why they were included, and the reasons for the excluded articles. This is usually one paragraph. You could also demonstrate this and eliminate some of the narrative using a PRISMA flow diagram.
- All sources should be peer reviewed and published within the previous 5 years. You may include:
- One clinical article
- One expert opinion (position statement, clinical practice guideline, lit review, scoping review, integrative review)
- One publication may be older than 5 years
- The rest must be research publications – ideally of the highest level of evidence if you are considering an EBP proposal or multiple types of research studies if you think you will be doing a research proposal.
Body of the Literature Review- In this section briefly discuss the literature reviewed including only the most salient information. Try not to present each article separately. It is better to integrate and synthesize the information so the reader can clearly understand how the evidence you are presenting, supports the proposal. If you have different focused areas, identify them using subheadings.
Summary Summarize/synthesize the literature reviewed. Synthesize it so it justifies the need for the project you are proposing. This should be about a paragraph, but can be a little longer if necessary.
This section should be at about two pages of text. 30%
Methods
This section of the paper may be bulleted due to the time constraints in this class.
Design- State the design of the study/project, and explain the rationale for the design chosen.
Examples for research proposal designs include
- Qualitative Research using a phenomenological method, or another design might be Qualitative using Grounded Theory, etc.
- Quantitative Research using a descriptive survey; Quantitative using a cross-sectional design; Quantitative using an experimental method; Quantitative using quasi-experimental method; etc.
- If you plan to use both methods it would be a Mixed-methods design.
Examples for EBP project designs typically use a Quality Improvement method.
Setting and Sample- State where the project will take place. Describe the sample population (inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria) and explain how they will be recruited.
Intervention What do you plan to do? Explain it here.
Data Collection Clearly state the data that will be collected and how it will be collected. Include the demographic data you plan to collect.
Instrumentation/Measures Explain you data collection instrument(s). Include validity and reliability statistics/information.
Data Analysis State the statistical analysis that will be used to analyze the data.
Protection for Human Participants State that IRB approval will be obtained. Discuss each of the following:
Risks:
Benefits:
Compensation:
Alternatives:
Autonomy:
Confidentiality:
Informed Consent: Explain if informed consent will be obtained.
Threats and Limitations Are there any known threats or limitations to this proposed project/study. If so include them here.
Try to keep this section to two pages and no more than three. 20%
Conclusions Summarize the proposal in one paragraph its purpose, significance, what will be done, and what this study/project is intended to accomplish. 5%
References 5%-should be 4 references that include 4 really good qualitative/quantative research
https://www.nursingworld.org/practice-policy/nursing-excellence/ethics/
https://doi.org/10.1186/s12889-024-20998-5
These two references dont count but ANA should be included in this and have APA format.
This refrences I included on MS is perfect to include in this essay. I want to talk about Multiple sclerosis and my idea was smoking cessation.
4 refrences need to be reliable qualaitative or qultative articles but match it whatever path you choose. If you do qualtative based on MS article I gave then try to only use qualtative articles.
No whckopedia allowed either. Relaible resouces less than 5 years old.
The abstract does NOT include the 7 pages needed to be done.
APA Format followed: 5%
Total = 100%
NO plagerism allowed at all. Should be 0% plagerism. NO CHAT gpt/NO AI. Chat gpt detector will be analyzed as well as turn it in and even more things to check.

Age-related changes in the skin
Age-related changes in the skin, oxidative stress, photodamage, heritable traits, and illnesses originating in other organ systems are manifested on the skin and often complicate the diagnostic and therapeutic picture. Chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus and HIV compound the problems in diagnosing and treating geriatric dermatologic diseases. The nurse practitioner should be familiar with how to determine if a cutaneous manifestation is normal aging or a sign of something more ominous.
Select one from the topic list below and discuss the etiology, prevalence, presentation, screening protocols, diagnostic workup and management strategies including treatment options, medications, and sequelae with follow up care.
Seborrheic keratosis, actinic keratosis, melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, decubitus ulcers, pruritus/xerosis, eczematous dermatitis, psychogenic dermatitides, infections of the skin, purpura, vascular compromise, chronic venous insufficiency, and bullous pemphigoid.

Teaching
Using the pediatric stages of development to support your answer (i.e. Erikson, Piaget, Kohlberg), please discuss the following questions:
1. How would a nurse prepare a 4-year-old child for surgery of cleft lip and palate differently than another pediatric age group? Please discuss preoperative teaching for the preschooler and choose another pediatric age group to compare and contrast (infants, toddlers, school-age, or adolescents).
2. Further, as you are preparing a child for surgery of cleft lip and palate, you notice signs and risk factors that indicate abuse. Discuss appropriate questions for the family and describe developmental differences that will affect how you approach a child regarding the abuse. (Choose one of the age groups you compared in question #1).
You are required to use at least two nursing references (your textbook is a great one). You will then respond to two of your classmates answers with your thoughts on their discussion. Your initial post must be at least 300 words. Your response to each classmate must be at least 150 words and you must support your response with an example from your nursing reference. Don’t forget to cite your nursing reference in correct APA format at the end of your discussion posts.
