  • Week 2- Assignment 2; Community for Emergency Preparedness

NO AI- Emergency preparedness is a critical component of community health and safety. APRNs play an essential role in disaster readiness, response, and recovery by engaging in assessment, planning, education, and interprofessional collaboration. This assignment will allow you to apply concepts of community assessment to identify emergency preparedness needs, develop a plan, and highlight the APRNs contribution in protecting population health. This outcome ensures that public health vulnerabilities, resource gaps, and risk factors are identified, enabling the development of proactive strategies that protect population health.

Later, in Week 4, you will select a community to perform a . Take a few minutes to preview that assignment and start thinking about what community you might choose. Part of a community assessment examines the emergency preparedness of a community. This assignment can be used as a building block of that community assessment. For this Week 2 assignment, use a community that you are considering choosing in Week 5.

    Instructions

Address the following prompts in 1-2 paragraphs per section. Your final submission should be 34 pages.

    • Select a geographic or population-based community (e.g., a rural town, urban neighborhood, city under 100,000 people).
    • Provide a brief overview of the community using demographic, socioeconomic, and health data.

    • Identify potential emergency situations relevant to the community (e.g., natural disasters, pandemics, chemical spills, mass casualty events).
    • Discuss factors that increase the communitys vulnerability (e.g., age distribution, poverty, access to healthcare, infrastructure).

    • Outline steps for prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery.
    • Include interprofessional and community resources (e.g., hospitals, EMS, Red Cross, public health agencies).
    • Address communication strategies, resource allocation, and cultural considerations.

    • Assessment: Identifying risks and health needs before and after an emergency.
    • Leadership & Collaboration: Coordinating with public health, emergency management, and community stakeholders and interprofessional team members. Consider using the information from your leadership interview.
    • Education: Teaching individuals and families about preparedness and response.
    • Clinical Role: Providing direct care during and after the emergency.
    • Policy & Advocacy: Supporting community-level policies to strengthen emergency readiness.

    • Discuss what you found most meaningful or challenging about creating the preparedness plan.
    • Reflect on the community assessment process: what strengths and vulnerabilities did you identify?
    • Consider how social determinants of health (e.g., income, access to care, transportation, housing) influenced your planning.
    • What interprofessional recommendations would you make to improve the emergency preparedness plan, based on the information you have gathered?

    Submission Requirements

Prior to completing your assignment, please review the grading rubric below for specific grading criteria. Then, submit your 34-page assignment as a Word or PDF file

    The Case Study:

You are a high school nurse and attended a school athletic event. A spectator suffered a cardiac arrest in the stands. A coach of the home team went into the high school to retrieve the Automatic Emergency Defibrillator (AED) in the gym, and it was missing from the locked cabinet. Fortunately, the Emergency Response Services (EMS) arrived and were able to resuscitate the spectator. On Monday morning, you discover that the AED was locked in the custodians closet.

After review of the case study, in a Microsoft Word document formatted in APA 7th edition including double-spaced throughout, include the following:

    • Title page
    • Introduction paragraph to provide necessary background information about the topic and clearly state the purpose of the paper.
    • A heading is required for each topic listed below:

    • Discuss 2-3 rationales for AEDs to be required in schools and other public settings.
    • Examine 2-3 sources of power to champion a preferred solution at the school including steps to resolve the issues (Review Ch. 8 Political Analysis and Strategies, Box 8-1, Sources of Power).
    • Explain 2-3 types of power the school nurse role may have to champion this issue.
    • Conclusion paragraph to summarize the main ideas and arguments, restate the purpose statement, and provide closure for the reader.

  • The Evolution of Healthcare and Entrepreneurship

Historically, nurses have demonstrated a remarkable capacity for entrepreneurship, a trait that has consistently positioned them as innovative and resourceful healthcare professionals. While the traditional image of nursing may conjure visions of dedicated caregivers at the bedside, the reality is that nurses have long played a pivotal role beyond the confines of clinical settings. From Florence Nightingale’s visionary leadership and healthcare advocacy to

groundbreaking initiatives that revolutionized the profession, entrepreneurship is deeply rooted in nursing history.

    Video linked: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KGmuv6ICWI

In today’s dynamic healthcare landscape, nurses have consistently proven to be entrepreneurs driven by a unique combination of skills, compassion, and adaptability. Nurses have historically been entrepreneurs for several compelling reasons, many of which reflect their dedication to patient care and innovative spirit. Consider their long history of entrepreneurship in the following areas:

    1. Patient-Centered Care: Nurses are inherently focused on patient well-being and often identify unmet healthcare needs. This patient-centered perspective drives them to develop innovative solutions and services to improve patient outcomes and experiences.
    2. Clinical Expertise: Nurses possess in-depth clinical knowledge and hands-on experience, which uniquely positions them to identify gaps in healthcare services and design interventions or businesses to address these gaps effectively.
    3. Holistic Approach: Nursing practice often takes a holistic view of patient care, considering not only the physical aspects but also the emotional, social, and psychological well-being of individuals. This holistic perspective encourages nurses to explore diverse approaches to healthcare, including entrepreneurial ventures.
    4. Innovation in Nursing Practice: Nurses have a history of pioneering new nursing practices, techniques, and models of care. Innovations like nurse-led clinics and nurse practitioner roles have emerged from nurses’ efforts to improve healthcare delivery.
    5. Advocacy for Patients: Nurses are strong patient advocates. They use their entrepreneurial spirit to advocate for better patient care and access to services, which may lead to the development of innovative healthcare solutions.
    6. Education and Training: Nursing education equips nurses with critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skillsvaluable attributes in entrepreneurial endeavors.
    7. Necessity and Resourcefulness: In various historical contexts, nurses have found themselves in resource-constrained environments where they must be resourceful and creative to meet patient needs. This resourcefulness often led to the development of innovative solutions.
    8. Nursing Leadership: Nursing leaders throughout history have often demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit, taking on leadership roles in healthcare organizations, initiating quality improvement projects, and developing new care models.
    9. Community Engagement: Many nurses are deeply engaged in their communities, and their close connections enable them to identify specific healthcare needs that traditional healthcare providers may not meet.
    10. Advances in Healthcare Technology: As healthcare technology has advanced, nurses have embraced technology as a means to enhance patient care. They often play pivotal roles in developing and implementing healthcare technology solutions, sometimes leading to entrepreneurial opportunities.
    11. Changing Healthcare Landscape: Periods of change and reform in healthcare systems have prompted nurses to explore new roles and entrepreneurial ventures that align with evolving healthcare demands.
    12. Passion for Healthcare Improvement: Nurses are passionate about improving healthcare delivery and patient outcomes. This passion drives them to explore innovative solutions and entrepreneurial opportunities.

    Instructions:

Consider the areas discussed above, and write a three-page paper on the evolution of healthcare and entrepreneurship and the importance of creating a solid business plan so you can move forward. Highlight the importance of recognizing and acting upon the opportunity, the components a business plan, and business barriers.

Examine the Confidentiality Agreement that accompanies this chapter. Identify when it would be appropriate for you to use it.

For this activity, write a dialogue for a 25 minute video of yourself talking about the below questions. * Give a brief summary of the scenario and identify which of the four malpractice elements were present, must be present, and why. * Offer strategies on how to avoid these constructs in your advanced practices.
