    Formulate a thoughtful, open-ended question with a curiosity score of 70 or above. Below, you will find several options to guide your initial post for this module. Try to create a question that encourages meaningful discussion. Click Ask a New Question to write your initial post and write your open-ended question first.     Please select only one of the topics below to discuss. These topics will require research. The post should be in your own words, but should be based on the evidence, not your opinion. You must support your guidance with evidence and cite your sources. For discussion board posts, in-text citations are not required, but be sure to list your references at the end of your post.

    Each student will be responsible for making ONE initial post (question with a description) and must reply to a minimum of two other postings.

    All posts must have a curiosity score of 70 or more. No points are given for curiosity score less than 70. You can edit your posts any time before the final due date!

    Please check the course calendar for assignment due dates. You must have an original post and 2 responses to receive credit. Plan accordingly!

    Checklist for initial post:

    1. Ask an open-ended question.
    2. In the description, give a brief background on your chosen topic and/or include 1-2 of the suggested points to boost your curiosity score.
    3. Include at least one evidence-based fact and cite a . It does not have to be a .
    4. Mention why your topic is important (health impact, personal connection, real-world application).
    5. Invite classmates to engage in discussion (can ask a follow-up question, request for experiences, any way to encourage responses)
    6. Curiosity score: 70-100

    Checklist for replies:

    1. Answer the open-ended question and/or follow-up questions in the post. Tip: reply to posts that are not the same topic as your initial post.
    2. Add another interesting fact that was not discussed in the initial post and cite a credible source.
    3. Contribute to the discussion by sharing a personal experience or responding to any follow-up questions that are in the initial post you are replying to.
    4. Curiosity score: 70-100

    Select only ONE prompt below for your initial question/discussion:

    1. Weight Loss Medication or Supplement Review

    Identify a medication or dietary supplement that is promoted for weight loss. Investigate its cost, safety, and effectiveness. Submit a short summary of your findings in your discussion board post.

    2. Societal Influence on Body Shape and Size

    Consider subtle and obvious ways that society influences how people perceive their body shape and size as being undesirable. What steps can be taken to change these perceptions? In your post, discuss societal influence and then what can be done to overcome that societal influence. Think about children, adolescents, and young adults when you develop your list.

    3. The Great Fat Debate

    There are many different types of fats used in cooking and food processing. The debate regarding which ones are the healthiest is ongoing. Choose one fat from the list below that is used in cooking or food processing. Discuss the health benefits and/or risks, as well as what factors should be considered when choosing fats for cooking and processed foods.

    Types of fats

    Oils (including but not limited to): any seed oil (grapeseed, sunflower), vegetable oil, canola oil, palm oil, olive oil, coconut oil, peanut oil, avocado oil, sesame oil, soybean oil

    Animal fats (including but not limited to): butter, ghee, lard, tallow

    (It is fine to research a fat that is not listed if you know it is used in cooking or food processing!)

    Other questions to consider: (You do not have to answer all of these questions, they are here to help you if you don’t know what to write or need to boost your curiosity score.)

    • What is the benefit of using this oil in cooking or food processing? (High smoke point? Palatability? Texture? etc.)
    • What factors contributed to the increase or decrease in use of this oil? Was it frequently used in the past and no longer used now, or is the oil you chose becoming more popular now due to the perceived health risks of other oils?
    • Have any celebrities, influencers, or major brands touted the health effects of this oil? Have they criticized this oil or encouraged people not to consume it? Was their recommendation based on scientific evidence?

    4. Interview with an Older Adult (>65 years)

    Interview an older adult family member or friend to learn about their food choices, ability to shop for and prepare meals, dietary supplement use, and opportunities for social interaction during mealtimes. Write up a summary of your interview, then outline evidence-based strategies for improving the nutrition status of older adults.

  • Nutrition Question

    The purpose of this is to evaluate and compare various dietary assessment methods.

    For this assignment, you will need to:

    Collect data through 24 hour recall, a 2-day diet record, and a Food Frequency questionnaire. Use the following tools (SAVE or SCREENSHOT results for each):

    After collecting data using the tools, evaluate methods by answering the following questions:

    Which tool/method was easiest to use?

    Which tool/method was most complicated?

    Consider the tools from a research perspective (think about the course readings), why might each of these methods be used?

    Compare and contrast your experience with completing each method. You should also consider what each website says about the tools.

    This should be 2-3 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font.

    Submit the following items:

    Any results from the 3 tools. (Any format – PDF, jpeg, Excel, etc)

    Submit your responses to the questions in a Word document.
