The movement eventually transformed into a nationwide anti-government uprising demanding justice and Hasinas resignation. Following massive public demonstrations and political pressure, Sheikh Hasina reportedly stepped down and later left Bangladesh for India. Many supporters of the movement described the moment as a second independence for Bangladesh.
