For nearly fifteen years, Bangladesh was ruled by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Bangladesh Awami League. During this period, many critics accused the government of authoritarianism, corruption, suppression of free speech, political harassment, and misuse of state power. In 2024, students from University of Dhaka launched a peaceful protest against the quota system in government jobs, arguing that it deprived qualified students of fair opportunities. The movement intensified after controversial remarks made by Sheikh Hasina regarding Razakars. As protests spread nationwide, violent clashes occurred, resulting in many deaths and arrests. The movement eventually transformed into a nationwide anti-government uprising demanding justice and Hasinas resignation. Following massive public demonstrations and political pressure, Sheikh Hasina reportedly stepped down and later left Bangladesh for India. Many supporters of the movement described the moment as a second independence for Bangladesh.
