  • Reading an Abstract

    Part 1

An articles abstract contains enough essential information about the article to be able to assess its merit and relevanceand you can discern and anticipate the logic of the authors argument before even reading through the full article (Shon, 2018, p. 34).

Locate 1 research study on your topic in your field of study (effect of electronics on children from 8-12) published in a peer-reviewed journal article f read the abstract.

Write a 250- to 300-word response to the following:

    • In your own words, what is the essential information and logic of the authors article/argument?

    Part 2

post a feedback for the following post based on part 1

    Post 1

I picked the article written by Constantinou et al. (2025) because it clearly establishes the connection between cultural competency and healthcare equity as it pertains to minority populations. It presents, in a clear manner, based on the findings of the research, the specific and tangible skills that health care providers can use when interacting with diverse patient populations in actual clinical settings. Therefore, unlike other articles that are more theoretical in nature, this study offers practical strategies on how health care providers can develop specific skills to help decrease disparity through intentional skill development, and makes it very relevant to my subject area.

This study utilized a Participatory Action Research (PAR) model to investigate the specific competencies required for effective interaction between healthcare providers and/or students with diverse patient populations. Through two PAR cycles using 94 medical students, the researchers were able to identify eight interconnected competencies: Open-mindedness; Empathy and Cultural Empathy; Deep Listening; Exploring Further; Knowledge; Self-Reflection; Working In Partnership; Praising the Patient. Together, these competencies represent the foundation of the “Wheel Model” created by the researchers and illustrate how each competency functions as part of providing culturally responsive and equitable care.

One of the major findings of this study was that “it is impossible to know everything about every culture, therefore being open-minded and collaborative with the patient will provide the best opportunity to become culturally competent.” (Constantinou et al., 2025) As such, equitable care starts with humility and an openness to learning from patients’ lived experiences. The authors emphasized that “previous experience and/or knowledge may not be enough to function effectively in diversity, thereby requiring ongoing training and continuous education throughout one’s career” (Constantinou et al., 2025) Furthermore, they stated that “being non-judgmental and open-minded towards your patients creates an environment where they feel comfortable discussing their thoughts, feelings and concerns regarding their health status which ultimately leads to accurate diagnoses and increased patient adherence.” (Constantinou et al., 2025). Therefore, I selected this article due to its ability to demonstrate how acquiring these skills is necessary to help eliminate disparities while at the same time promote equitable access to health care for minority populations.

    Part 3

A social science journal articles introduction is like a blueprint and a map: it lays out the itinerary of an articles path of logical traveland are organized and structured into predictable patterns (Shon, 2018, p, 41).

Locate 1 research study on your topic in your field of study ( effect of electronic on children 8-12)published in a peer-reviewed journal article and read the introduction.

Write a 250- to 300-word response to the following:

    • How do the authors organize the introduction? Do the subheadings and articles discussion follow the blueprint and map outlined in the introduction?
    • As you reflect on what you have learned about writing an introduction, what might you do differently in writing introductions as you progress through the dissertation process?

    post 1

The authors of “Linking Top Management Commitment and Circular Practice Through Human Resource Perspective: Do Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Make a Difference in Sustainability?” (Li, Zhang, Appolloni, & Liu, 2025) organize the introduction in a manner that closely follows the recommended “blueprint and map” for academic writing. They begin by emphasizing the importance of sustainability within corporate social responsibility and environmental management, setting a broad context that highlights the relevance of their research (Li et al., 2025). The introduction then narrows its focus to the critical role of top management commitment and circular practices, establishing the significance of integrating DEI initiatives within human resource practices to enhance sustainability outcomes. This logical progression from broad themes to specific research gaps exemplifies an effective structure that guides readers seamlessly into the core of the study.

Furthermore, the subheadings and subsequent discussion in the article follow the initial blueprint. The authors systematically develop their theoretical framework, research questions, and hypotheses, ensuring consistency between the introduction and the main body of the paper. This alignment enables readers to anticipate the progression of ideas and understand how each section contributes to addressing the identified research gaps (Li et al., 2025). The coherence between the introduction and subsequent sections demonstrates the authors deliberate effort to map out their argument clearly and logically.

Reflecting on my own writing practice, I recognize the value of explicitly outlining the studys scope, significance, and structure early in the introduction. Moving forward, I would focus on crafting an introduction that not only contextualizes the research but also clearly articulates the research trajectory and key components. This strategy will facilitate coherence, enhance reader engagement, and provide a strong foundation for the entire dissertation, aligning with best practices in scholarly writing (American Psychological Association [APA], 2020).

Case Study 1 Air Quality, Asthma, and Community Voice in Eastside Gardens

    Context

Eastside Gardens is a historically underresourced neighborhood located near a major freeway and several small manufacturing plants. Childhood asthma rates are 3 higher than the county average. A university research team receives funding to study environmental triggers and proposes installing indoor and outdoor airquality monitors.

A local communitybased organization (CBO), Healthy Homes Collective, has been advocating for environmental justice for years. They agree to partner, but tensions emerge early.

    Key Ethical Tensions

    • Respect for Persons (Belmont) Some families worry the monitors will collect data that could be used against them (e.g., housing inspections, immigration concerns).
    • Beneficence The university wants to publish quickly; the CBO wants slower, relationshipbuilding work and immediate mitigation resources.
    • Justice Community members ask: Why is our neighborhood always studied but never helped?
    • CBPR Components
      • Shared power is uneven the university controls the grant.
      • Transparency is strained unclear who owns the airquality data.
      • Capacity building is requested the CBO wants training to interpret data.

    Students Critical Assessment and Recommendations

1.How should the research team restructure the partnership to align with CBPR principles?

2.(shared decisionmaking, cocreation of research questions, community oversight)

3.How should Belmont principles guide decisions about consent, data ownership, and risk/benefit distribution?

4.What would an ethical datasharing agreement look like?

5.What immediate community benefits should be built into the project?

Case Study 2 Diabetes Prevention in the Riverbend Tribal Community

    Context

The Riverbend Tribal Community has rising rates of Type 2 diabetes. A regional health system proposes a diabetesprevention program based on a standard curriculum used statewide. Tribal leaders express concern that the curriculum ignores cultural food practices, historical trauma, and community strengths.

The health system wants to evaluate the programs effectiveness using biometric data (A1C, BMI, blood pressure). Tribal leaders insist that data sovereignty and cultural protocols must be respected.

    Key Ethical Tensions

    • Respect for Persons (Belmont) Tribal members emphasize collective consent, not just individual consent.
    • Beneficence The health system wants measurable outcomes; the tribe wants cultural safety and longterm capacity building.
    • Justice Historical exploitation of Indigenous communities raises concerns about who benefits from the research.
    • CBPR Components
      • Need for cocreation of curriculum with tribal elders.
      • Shared governance over data (tribal IRB or advisory council).
      • Reciprocity the tribe wants guaranteed training for community health workers.

    Students Critical Assessment and Recommendations

    1. How should the research team adapt the project to honor tribal sovereignty and CBPR principles?
    2. How do Belmont principles apply when the community not just individuals is the unit of ethical concern?
    3. What does ethical consent look like in a tribal context?
    4. How should data ownership, storage, and dissemination be governed?
