Film Analysis 2: Masculinity and meat consumption symbolism
Project Overview: Film Analysis 2
Mandatory Requirement: This assignment requires a heavy, integrated analysis of the attached Barca (2020) reading and the documentary The Game Changers.
Important: Both the Barca text and the film must be cited multiple times throughout the entire essay (Introduction, Body, and Conclusion) using formal APA in-text citations.
Required Materials:
- Attached Reading: Barca, L. (2020). “Stewed in mighty symbolism of wealth, power and masculinity: The legitimation of meat-eating through anti-vegan rhetoric in mainstream US news.” In J. Hannan (Ed.), Meatsplaining: The Animal Agriculture Industry and the Rhetoric of Denial. Sydney University Press. (USE EXTENSIVELY)
- Documentary: The Game Changers (2018)
Technical Specifications
- Word Count: 800 1000 words.
- Format: Word or PDF.
- Layout: Times New Roman, 12 pt, 1.5 line spacing.
- Citation Style: APA (In-text citations required for every claim/definition).
Essay Structure & Writing Instructions
1. Introduction (1 Paragraph)
- Introduce the documentary and Lisa Barcas chapter.
- Identify the focus: The symbolic link between masculinity and meat consumption.
- Thesis Statement: End with a clear argument on whether the film challenges traditional gendered meat-eating tropes or simply reinvents them to create a “new” version of masculinity.
2. Body (Multiple Citations Required)
- 2.1 Film Description: Summarize the films central claim. Use specific examples from the documentary (e.g., the elite athletes, the “firefighters” scene) that highlight how it portrays “manhood” or “performance.” (Cite the film here).
- 2.2 Barcas Framework (MANDATORY): Explain Barcas argument regarding how meat consumption is morally legitimized through gendered symbolism. You must define “masculinity,” “symbolism,” and “moral legitimation” as she does. (Cite Barca multiple times in this section).
- 2.3 Critical Analysis: This is the core of the essay. Use Barcas theories to analyze the film. Discuss if the films version of “plant-based masculinity” actually disrupts the “wealth, power, and masculinity” trio Barca describes, or if it just swaps “meat” for “plants” while keeping the same aggressive, performance-based male tropes. (Integrate citations from both sources throughout).
3. Conclusion (1 Paragraph)
- Restate the thesis in a new way.
- Summarize how your analysis shows the films role in the contemporary “legitimation” of diet and gender. (Include final references to the core arguments).
4. References (APA Style)
Include this exact reference list:
- Barca, L. (2020). Stewed in mighty symbolism of wealth, power and masculinity: The legitimation of meat-eating through anti-vegan rhetoric in mainstream US news. In J. Hannan (Ed.), Meatsplaining: The Animal Agriculture Industry and the Rhetoric of Denial (pp. [Insert Page Range]). Sydney University Press.
- Psihoyos, L. (Director). (2018). The Game Changers [Film]. Oceanic Preservation Society.
Final Note to Writer
The “moral legitimacy” aspect is key. Barca argues that meat-eating is protected by these symbols; your job is to prove if the movie is a “game changer” for those symbols or if it is just “re-branding” them. Ensure Barca is cited in at least 3 separate paragraphs.

Presentation Points (Criteria Addendum)
CSCJ 388: Sociological Theory
Dates have now been assigned for students who have completed the task associated with either selecting or accepting from the instructor a theory for presentation. It is imperative that your presentation occurs on the assigned day (given class size and how coverage has been configured to align with chapters and objectives).
As discussed in class, presentations will not exceed 15 minutes, and in fact, have in the past averaged 7 minutes. Your presentation may include any aspect of the theory that will help us to better understand the origin and nature of that particular theory. On the day of your brief presentation, be sure to cover the following in your discussion (specific coverage of these points will ensure that you have the basic content for your final paper). While the presentation is due strictly on the day provided, you have until the last day of class to submit your refined paper.
1. What specific sociological theory are you presenting?
2. What does it argue?
3. Who is the major proponent?
4. Who are other proponents?
5. Which of the major three sociological perspectives or frameworks is most aligned with the theory?
6. What are the key sociological terms/concepts used in explaining your theory?
7. Identify at least one other sociological theory that is related to the theory presented.
8. What specific phenomenon have you identified to show how the theory chosen would explain this problem? ExpIain.
9. Identify other phenomena or problems that have been explained using this theory.
10. Do you tend to agree with the major contentions of the theory? Why/why not?
For your paper, all of the above should be explicitly addressed. As previously reviewed, the 5-10 page paper should follow APA, Chicago, or other approved formal style and include a minimum of five references with your textbook being one of these. Be sure to cite your work appropriately. You may think of your paper as expounding on the presentation points. In this sense and given the required length of the paper, you will need to ensure that your work is succinct, accurate, and does not include extraneous information.

SLA #1
Sociologists have used empirical research to demonstrate that our class, race, and gender statuses influence
our lives. To further develop your sociological imagination, I am asking you to engage with the course material
on social class. Throughout your assignment, you should demonstrate your understanding of the sociological
perspective. To do this, you should meaningfully engage with course readings, lecture notes, and/or discussion
section materials.
For this assignment, you can choose to answer the following questions by
either WRITING A PAPER OR RECORDING A VIDEO PRESENTATION.
You only have to do one or the other, not both!
Assignment questions
1. Explain how Domhoff defines social class and contrast this with Socioeconomic Status (SES) as a
measure of class. What pieces of information would you need from an individual to identify their
class based on Domhoffs understanding of class? What would you need to know about an
individual to determine their SES? Which measure of class do you find preferable? Explain why.
2. Drawing on Shapiro, explain the terms wealth and income and why it is important to distinguish
between wealth and income when considering ones class status and life circumstances. Explain
how wealth and income might contribute to social class reproduction.
3. Apply Domhoffs perspective to your own life. In other words, identify and describe the key
institutions (i.e. school, social clubs/extracurriculars, work, etc.) and social networks you have had
access to in your life. Explain the terms social mobility and social class persistence. Explain how
your access to specific institutions and social networks might lead to social mobility or social class
persistence in your life.
PAPER OPTION INSTRUCTIONS
One option for this assignment is to write a paper where you answer ALL of the assignment questions,
following these paper guidelines:
Write a paper that is approximately 3-5 pages double-spaced with 12-point font and 1-inch margins.
You should answer each of the assignment questions fully and with complete sentences.
Please clearly number your answers according to the question you are answering.
Writing will be considered while grading.
Documents should be uploaded in one of the following formats: .doc, .docx, .pdf. Do NOT submit
.pages documents.
You should NOT bring in any outside sources or collaborate with anyone on this assignment.
Your assignment should NOT contain any quotes from the course readings. Your entire assignment
should be written in your own words.
At the end of your paper, you should include an AI Acknowledgement Statement, if necessary (see AI
policy below).
You do NOT need to include a works cited page.
In order to receive written feedback on your assignment, write Written Feedback Requested at the
top of your assignment. If you do not specify that you would like written feedback, we will grade using
the rubric on ICON and will leave few, if any, comments.
