Current Events in Public Health #2: Healthy People Interest Area

Find Support for Your Interest in Healthy People

    Overview

The “Current Events in Public Health” assignments are designed to help integrate the concepts in each module and then relate them to public health current events. This week the topic is: Matching Current Events to Your HP2030 Interest Area

It helps to meet: Course Objective 11: Describe the organization, financing and delivery of various medical and population-based services in the U.S. healthcare system. HP 2030 is the main organization and delivery for Public Health services in the US.

This week, you will use your HP 2030 interest area and then find a current article on it.

    Key Takeaways:

*Healthy People 2030 contains the public health objectives for the US.

*It can serve as a framework for health problem identification.

*Health views can integrate the beliefs of individuals and groups.

*It is possible to find current articles on a topic you are interested in to begin your research.

    Reading

Article This week you find your own article. It must be within the last year and relate to your HP 2030 research topic.

    Assignment Steps

    1. Use the same topic and HP2030 information you spoke of and shared in the last 2 discussions. Do not pick a new interest.
    2. Using that HP 2030 Category and Subset from the last discussion, find an article about your area of interest. A good tip is to search “recent articles on (your topic)”.
    3. The article should be one where you can get full text (not just an abstract) and be one that is understandable to you. For example, a medical journal article on cellular changes in diabetes would be above the scope of the class. A New York Times story on increases in diabetes in 2024 would be more appropriate.
    1. Post your objective area and subset from last week.
    2. Write a 3-5 sentence summary of the article and include one fact.
    3. Post a screenshot of the article you used.
    4. Make sure to have it in the reference. If you use AI, make sure to cite it.
    5. READ my example. Yours should look like it! It should not be much longer or shorter.
    6. Please bold and format the work as I did below.

    Example Post:

My HP Objective and subset for my interest area is:

Social Determinants of Health>Healthcare Access and Quality

The article I found is about racism and healthcare. It highlights how racial and ethnic minorities in the US have higher rates of illness and death. For example, blacks have a life expectancy of four years less than whites. Gender/racial biases, income, access to healthcare, and other social determinants of health all contribute to the problem. Women are highlighted in this article as being underfunded. (Priya).

    What You Need to Accomplish

    1. Provide an article summary on your topic of interest of 3-5 sentences.
    2. Repeat your area of interest HP 2030 ( the same as from Discussion 2)
    3. Provide the objective area and subset in the format provided
    4. Provide a screenshot of the article for your additional fact.
    5. Use the format in the example.
    6. Reference at the end.

    Summary Tips

A summary is a short overview of the main idea. It is not listing facts, copying or saying a great deal. It is JUST the main idea of the article with a key point or two to support that idea. It has a clear overview sentence. Read my example to see.

The area I choice is: Health Conditions > Mental Health and Mental Disorders As I mentioned in the previous discussion, the video’s message isn’t limited to treatment but also includes protecting both mind and body. This is something I discovered through experience with a family member. When you’re caring for a patient, you focus on their treatment and forget about yourself, and in doing so, you lose your mental and physical health. In my opinion, maintaining your mental and physical health is a significant part of treating patients.

Topic: Visit a museum of your choice (in person or online) and choose a specific artwork, artifact, or exhibit to explore in-depth. Analyze its historical, cultural, or artistic significance, and discuss how the museums display of the item(s) contributes to your understanding of it. Writing Guidelines: Length: 2-3 pages Format: formatting requirements MLA Introduction: Clear thesis statement or research question in the introduction to guide the papers direction. Analysis: The bulk of the paper should be an analysis. How does the artwork fit into its cultural, historical, or artistic context? How does it relate to other works or themes explored in class? Conclusion: Students should end with a conclusion that reflects on the larger significance of their topicwhether thats the broader impact of the artwork or the role museums play in shaping public knowledge. Instructions: Write a 2-3 page paper (double-spaced, 12-point font, Times Roman, MLA format). In your paper, include: Museum in person: Write about your visit to a museum, reflecting on the exhibits you found most engaging and your reactions.
