“All young people regardless of sexual orientation or identity deserve a safe and supportive environment in which to achieve their full potential.” Harvey Milk

Module objective: Explore the rich history of the LGBTQ+ community from the turn of the 20th century through the Stonewall Riots in 1969 and beyond. Identify Arizona History and Social Science State Standards that pertain to the teaching of Latino history in Arizona classrooms.

We are going to learn about GBLTQ+ history from Smithsonian film, Beyond Stonewall, Exploring LGBTQ+ History Through the Smithsonian Archives. (Video is posted below).

The film explores the incredible objects from the National Museum of American History that showcases the rich history of the LGBTQ+ community from the turn of the 20th century through the Stonewall Riots in 1969 and beyond.

    To Do:

    1. Create and complete a KWL chart for the film. A KWL chart is a graphic organizer used to facilitate learning. It helps students activate prior knowledge, set learning goals, and reflect on what they’ve learned. The acronym KWL stands for What I know, What I Need to Know and What I Learned. Here is what your KWL chart needs to look like:

    KWL Chart
K – What I Know about GBLTQ+ contributions to US and Arizona History What I Need to Know about AZ Academic Standards as they pertain to GBLTQ+ contributions to US and AZ history. L- What I learned about LGBTQ+ contributions to US and Arizona history from the film, Beyond Stonewall (list at least 8 things that you learned about in the film)
    1. Scroll through the and identify 3 standards that pertain to the teaching of GBLTQ + contributions to American and Arizona history. You may copy and paste the standards into the “What I Need to Know” part of the chart. You may copy and paste the standards into the What I Need to Know part of the chart. Include the grade level of the standard, the discipline and standard number. Example : 6.E5.1 Describe the factors that influence trade between countries or cultures.

    2. Before you watch the film, Beyond Stonewall, record what you already know about GBLTQ+ history and contributions to the U.S. Don’t Google or AI anything- just list what you already know, if you know don’t know much, it is okay- just say that.

    3. Scroll through the and identify 3 standards that pertain to the teaching of GBLTQ + contributions to American and Arizona history. You may copy and paste the standards into the “What I Need to Know” part of the chart. You may copy and paste the standards into the What I Need to Know part of the chart. • AI Assignment

    Purpose:

The purpose of this essay is to enter into the conversation, via an academic essay, about the integration of artificial intelligence and other technology into our lives and society. Remember, your opinion will not be graded.

You may think that artificial intelligence and modern technology is a positive or a negative part of our modern world. However, you will need to explore your own opinion about this topic using the readings from this module.

Ultimately, your essay must be organized around and support a clear thesis statement regarding AI and/or technology usage in our world, taking a clear side in the larger debate.

No matter what your opinion is, you will be supporting it with the articles from the module.

    Skills:

The assignment will support your skills that are critical in writing an academic essay using multiple sources. Refer to the Essay Grading Rubric for specific grading criteria.

    • integration of sources using MLA documentation:
    • using critical thinking skills (critical thinking + critical reading [the texts over AI] = critical writing);
    • utilizing feedback from your instructor, peers, and any writing tutor visits over rough draft of essay;
    • editing and proofreading final draft.

    1. Decide how you feel about artificial intelligence and other modern technology that may or may not be intruding on our lives. Other technologies that play off the ideas that may help you find a topic for your essay:

    • Do you feel that artificial intelligence and/or other specific aspects of modern technology control too much of our lives?
    • Feel free to “play” with this idea but remember that the answer is ultimately driven by your own opinion, one which you will need to use documented evidence to support.
    1. Find at least two articles to use as support for your thesis. While you are free to use multiple articles from the assigned readings, only one will count toward the minimum number of sources. The second required source must be from your original research.

    PART 1-

    PaintingValue in Painting

Analyze how an artist organizes a painting through value.

Value Pattern is a way to organize a painting or art work. It is the organization of lights and darks to lead the viewer through the work. A high contrast area (black to white values) of the image will attract the eye first. Then you can follow values through the rest of the work to see the rest of the information. An Artist is the director of the work.

Please pick a favorite REPRESENTATIONAL painting (it shows realism, what things actually look like as opposed to non objective abstraction- not based on real objects) and either

    1. Print out a black and white copy of it OR convert online to black and white and save a jpg of it online in a program where you can mark it up.
    2. Then look at the painting by squinting your eyes at it. (This reduces it to basic shapes of value).
    3. Reduce the painting to basic shapes of value in black, gray and white by recreating the work in basic shapes of value.
    4. See how the painting is balanced, what is the area you notice first, how do you move through the work following value. Write these notes in the discussion, posted with the original, and the simple shape value analysis and respond to at least 2 others in the class.

    PART 2-

For this week’s assignment, we are going to create a class Padlet Gallery wall. Thinking of the artworks we saw last week and Chicanx art that you have seen, we will analyze the artworks through the lens of Ethnic Studies concepts and terms. See Padlet below.

    1. Click the “+” on the bottom right of Padlet below to post an image- and if your name shows as “anonymous” please change it or put comment in the assignment so I know it is you for points.
    2. For the “subject” line- provide the artist’s name, title of the work, year made and medium (artworks titles should be in quotes)
    3. Write a caption under the photo that relates the artwork to Ethnic Studies- write at least 50 words for full credit (please type your name here if it is not showing anywhere else).

After you post submit the assignment then I will go in and check the Padlet and post your points and will leave feedback in the gradebook comment box.

Please don’t post the same image that someone else has already posted. You can search the internet or use an image from our slides (Remember Week 1 had several images) or it could be images of murals. The artist doesn’t have to be famous, here is a list of artists from the “Chicano Collection” to give you some ideas but it doesn’t have to be one of these.

Carlos Almaraz, Chaz Bojrquez, Pablo Andres Cristi, Einar and Jamex de la Torre, Gaspar Enrquez, Margaret Garca, CiCi Segura Gonzlez, Raul Guerrero, Gronk, Wayne Alaniz Healy, Adn Hernndez, Leo Limn, Gilbert Magu Lujn, Csar A. Martnez, Frank Romero, Ricardo Ruiz, Eloy Torrez, John Valadez, Patssi Valdez, Jaime Germs Zacarias, and Vincent Valdez.

Introduction to Interdisciplinary Studies Assignment Instructions

    Overview

Interdisciplinary Studies is a growing field in the academic setting that allows students to combine two Areas of Study for research on a complex topic. But what exactly is Interdisciplinary Studies? What are complex topics? According to Repko & Szostak (2021), Interdisciplinary Studies is a process of answering a question, solving a problem, or addressing a topic that is too broad or complex to be dealt with adequately by a single discipline (p. 9).

In addition, interdisciplinary studies relies on disciplinary insights which are integrated to form a more well-rounded look at a complex problem.

    Instructions

For this assignment, you will need to read the following: Chapter 1 of the Repko & Szostak textbook Interdisciplinary Research Process and Theory.

Read one (1) of the following articles:

    • Could This Radical New Approach to Alzheimers Lead to a Breakthrough?
    • Ancient DNA is a powerful tool for studying the past when archaeologists and geneticists work together
    • Teaching Shakespeare Online: Challenges, Advantages, and Strategies
    • How Do You Communicate Uncertainty and Promote Public Health During COVID-19 and Beyond?

Use the formatting style (APA, MLA, AMA or Turabian) of your primary Area of Study. See the Writing Style Guides found on the left-hand menu of Canvas.

Write a 3-4 page essay that answers the following questions:

    • What is Interdisciplinary Studies? Explain in your own words. Use material from the textbook to support your writing.
    • Review one of the linked articles.
      • What is the problem that is being studied/discussed? Discuss why the problem is complex (as defined by the textbook).
      • What disciplines/professionals/fields of study are used to approach the problem? What insights does each provide related to the problem?
      • What final solutions or insights are provided by the author? How was an interdisciplinary approach helpful in this situation?
      • Using supporting material from the textbook, was this actually an interdisciplinary approach? Or did this article use one of the other types: transdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, or integrative process?
    • Discuss how your understanding of Interdisciplinary Studies has changed after working through the reading material for this assignment.
    • Number 2
    • APA format

      Requirements: 3-4 pages
